BERKELEY - Martin Maric made the Croatian Olympic team in the discus on July 22 when he qualified for the Beijing Games with a personal-best mark of 62.68 meters in Ljubljana, Slovenia, making him the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
Maric -- Cal's 45th athlete to qualify for the Games, the 45th Cal Olympian in the history of the program and only current track and field student-athlete from the University to compete in this summer's Olympic Games -- surpassed the Olympic "B" standard of 62.50 meters to earn his spot on Croatia's Olympic team. He will be joined at the Games by former Bears Magdalena Lewy (a current Cal assistant coach), Grace Upshaw and Kristin Heaston representing the U.S. team, and Amin Nikfar representing Iran.
Having just wrapped up his first year at Cal after transferring from Georgia, Maric achieved All-America status at the NCAA Championships earlier this year when he recorded a mark of 185-10 (56.64m) in the discus, taking eighth overall. It was the second time he earned All-America honors in his collegiate career.
