BERKELEY - Junior David Torrence is the Muscle Milk Athlete of the Week after being the top Golden Bear standout in a spectacular day at Edwards Stadium on Saturday. In the final event of the California Collegiate Challenge, the junior broke a 50-year old Golden Bear record by running the mile in 3:58.62. Torrence's mark topped the previous Cal record, registered by Don Bowden in 1957 who was the first American to run a sub-four-minute mile at 3:58.70. Fifty-years later with Bowden in attendance, Torrence broke the mark.
In addition to Torrence's excellent effort, junior Alysia Johnson posted the best time in the country this year in the 800-meter run, establishing her own school record with a time of 2:01.48. That time broke the previous record set by Louise Romo 23 years ago.
The Golden Bear track performances were part of another outstanding weekend of performances in Berkeley. On the softball field, freshman Marissa Drewrey tossed a three-hit complete game shutout as Cal edged No. 7 Arizona State, 1-0. Baseball's Tyler Ross, last week's Muscle Milk Athlete of the Week, also pitched another gem, hurling eight innings with nine strikeouts in a 4-2 victory - also against Arizona State, ranked No. 6 in the nation in baseball.
The Cal track and field teams are back in action this weekend with individuals in action at the Modesto Relays.
