BEARS COMPETE AT 109TH BIG MEET
The University of California's track and field teams compete against Stanford in the annual Big Saturday, May 3 at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford campus. This year marks the 109th running of the rivalry meet for the men's teams, and the 24th for the women's squads. In a departure from the norm, Stanford will hold the event in the early evening hours. Field events begin with the women's javelin at 3:50 p.m. and conclude with the women's discus at 7:35 p.m. The women's 3000 meter steeplechase starts the running events at 5 p.m., while the final gun of the day is the men's 4x400m relay at 8:30 p.m.

BIG MEET HISTORY
The Cal men lead the series with Stanford, 63-43-2, dating back to a 91-35 Golden Bear win in 1893. Stanford holds the edge on the women's side, 13-10. Both the Cardinal men and women have defeated the Bears the past two seasons. Last year, Stanford won the Big Meet 94-69 (men) and 101-62 (women). Cal's last victories against Stanford came in 2000 with win margins of 84-79 (men) and 83 2/3-79 1/3 (women). This season, both Stanford teams are ranked in the Top 10 of the April 22 Trackwire 25 poll. The women's squad is ranked eighth, while the men's team claims the No. 9 spot in the nation.

BIG MEET TO BE TELEVISED
Saturday's Big Meet will be broadcast on the College Sports Television network (channel 610-DirecTV). CSTV is a brand new network devoted solely to collegiate athletics and airs 24 hours a day. The broadcast time and date is to be determined. Check www.calbears.com for updates.

AT THE 2002 BIG MEET
At last year's Big Meet, the Golden Bears' men's team fell to Stanford for the first time in Berkeley since 1966. The Cardinal women's squad was also victorious. Despite the losses, Cal recorded 18 personal best performances and posted three of the six Big Meet records that were set. The most impressive of all the records set was Jennifer Joyce's win in the hammer, breaking her own Canadian and school record with a throw of 214-0.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW

CAL INVITATIONAL
The Bears set numerous personal bests at the Cal Invitational, hosted in Berkeley last Friday-Saturday. Junior Deanna Slaton gave one of the more impressive performances, winning the 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 58.93. That time stands as the fourth fastest in Cal's history, and is the second fastest among Pac-10 performers this season. Sophomore Tamrya d'Artenay also turned in top-notch performances, winning both the hammer (156-10) and shot put events (45-11.75). Her shot put toss was her farthest this season and meets both NCAA and Pac-10 qualifying standards. On the men's side senior Joe Berro won the javelin throw (211-10) and sophomore David Glasgow was victorious in the high jump (6-7.5).

PENN RELAYS
For the first time in 10 years, the California men's track and field team was represented at the 109th Penn Relays last Friday. The Golden Bears competed in the 4x100 meter and distance medley relays at the elite meet. Cal's 4x100 meter relay team of senior Nick Mazur, sophomore Toby Atawo, freshman Chris Boykin and sophomore Ricci Dula finished fourth in the sixth heat with a time of 41.43. The Bears' distance medley relay team of sophomores Carlos Carballo, Randy Fair, Girmay Guangul and freshman Kevin Davis finished in sixth place in the second heat with a time of 10:03.88.

UCSD TRITON INVITATIONAL
Sophomore Rhuben Williams finished fourth in the hammer with a peronal best throw of 200-7 at the Trition Invitational, hosted by the University of California, San Diego last weekend. That mark moved Williams to No. 4 on Cal's all-time best performances list in the hammer throw. Junior Tony Miranda also garnered a fourth-place finish in the discus (183-3). His top discus toss this season is 183-10.

TEAK WILBURN TIES CAL FRESHMAN HIGH JUMP RECORD
Freshman Teak Wilburn tied a Cal freshman record in the high jump (7-3.25) at the Mt. SAC Relays Apr. 19. That mark moves him into a sixth-place tie with Clarence Johnson on Cal's all-time best performances list and meets NCAA and Pac-10 postseason qualifying standards. That mark also puts him into a five-way tie for the second-best mark nationally. Wilburn is ranked fifth in the high jump in Trackwire's Apr. 22 Dandy Dozen List. The list is a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event. The factors used to build the D12 include quantitative values that measure performances in past major competitions (such as conference championships, national championships and Olympic competition), durability and freedom from injuries, demonstrated ability to compete well in multiple rounds of competition, ability in other events, head-to-head competition with other top athletes, and personal or seasonal bests.

GIRMAY GUANGUL BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 10,000m
Sophomore Girmay Guangul broke Cal's 10,000m record in a Pac-10 qualifying time of 29:17.78 at the Stanford Invitational Mar. 29. The previous record was 29:24.3, set by Rich McCann at the 1981 Mt. SAC Relays.

33 ATHLETES ALREADY POSSESS POSTSEASON QUALIFYING MARKS

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO DETERMINE NCAA QUALIFIERS IN NEW 2003 FORMAT
The qualifying standards for the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships has changed from years past, as for the first time ever, the NCAA will use Regional Championship meets to determine qualifying for the national meet. Stating a desire to place an emphasis on competition, rather than best marks, the NCAA Championships will draw the top-five finishers in each individual event, and top-three relay teams from each of the four regionals nationwide, to be contested May 30-31. Athletes will qualify for the Regional meets by meeting pre-determined NCAA standards. The NCAA will then round out the Championships field by selecting the highest-ranking indivdiuals (approximately six per individual event and five per relay) from the national collegiate performance lists, provided those athletes competed at their respective Regional meets and were not among the finishers to earn automatic NCAA berths. The lone exception to the Regional qualifying system will be the 10,000m and multi-events, which will not be subject to Regional competition. Athletes will continue to qualify for the NCAA Championships in those events as they have in the past, by meeting pre-determined provisional and automatic-qualifying standards. The west coast's Regional Qualifier will be hosted by Stanford.

UP NEXT FOR THE BEARS...
After this weekend, the Bears are a busy bunch, as athletes will compete in several different competitions on the weekend of May 9-11. The Cardinal Qualifier and Modesto Relays are held that weekend, and in Berkeley, Cal hosts the Challenge of Atlas & Athena-a heptathlon and decathlon meet. The Pac-10 Multi Championship is also that weekend, hosted by USC in Los Angeles.
