BERKELEY - Deborah Maier captured both the 1500 and 3000 meters at the Big Meet, helping Cal to its first victory over Stanford in the annual dual since 2000, making the sophomore runner the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week. Maier and freshman Sofia Oberg led a 1-2 Cal finish in the 1500, with Maier taking first in 4:26.92 and Oberg right behind in 4:28.45. In the 3000, Maier broke free of the pack early in her final lap and cruised to a nearly five-second victory over Stanford's Kathy Kroeger, 9:26.60 to 9:31.27. Maier's 3000 win gave the Bears five points and tied the meet at 79 points apiece just before the final event, the 4x400 relay, which Cal won to clinch the victory.
