AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Mike Morrison completed his first decathlon of the 2010 season Thursday, finishing second at the prestigious Texas Relay with 7,557 points - a total ranks fifth in Cal history and is the highest for a Golden Bear since Bevan Hart accumulated 8,002 points in 2000.
Morrison stood in third place after Wednesday opening five events and held onto the spot until the final race - the 1500 meters - when he surged past Texas A&M's Trinity Otto for the runner-up position. Defending NCAA champion Ashton Eaton of Oregon won the competition with 8,310 points, and Otto finished with 7,542.
Only four men are ahead of Morrison on the school's all-time performer's list - Chris Huffins (school-record 8,007 points in 1993), Hart (8002 in 2000), Ross Bomben (7,808 in 1998) and Dave Steen (7,778 in 1980).
On a warm, blustery day with wind gusts up to 25 mph, Morrison started off with a PR in the 110-meter high hurdles, crossing the finish line in 14.92 seconds, which was seventh among the 18 competitors in the decathlon.
Morrison threw the discus 123-7 before clearing 15-1 in the pole vault. He then set a PR in event No. 9, the javelin, with a heave of 176-0. In the 1500 meters, Morrison was eighth overall in 4:51.93, a time that gave him 607 points and moved him ahead of Otto, last year's seventh-place finisher at the NCAA championships, who posted a time of 5:04.40 (535 points).
Morrison, a transfer from Florida, owns a PR of 7,803 in the decathlon from 2008. During the recently completed indoor season, he captured the MPSF heptathlon championship and finished third at the NCAA meet with a Cal-record total of 5,826 points.
Cal's track & field team continues with its schedule Saturday when the Golden Bears travel to the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz. The team returned to Berkeley for the Big Meet vs. Stanford April 10, before hosting the Brutus Hamilton Invitational April 23-24 and the Pac-10 championships in May.
