DES MOINES, Iowa -
California had four competitors in action in the second day of the NCAA Championships today in Des Moines, Iowa. Senior All-American David Torrence was the only one of the four who advanced to the final in his event. He posted a time of 3:42.47 and placed seventh in the prelims of the 1500 meters. Senior All-American Alysia Johnson's bid for a third NCAA 800-meter title came to an end on Thursday. Johnson, who was also trying to become the first Cal track and field athlete to garner All-America honors for the seventh time, did not run in the semifinals due to a minor foot injury suffered at the end of her preliminary race yesterday. "Alysia's foot was sore, but she could have run today," said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "It would have been sorer if she ran today, and then even more if she ran in the final. She would have had to take some time off to let her foot heal with the Olympic Trials just a couple weeks away. We had her foot checked out and she's fine. We just didn't want to risk anything with the trials right around the corner." Juniors Mark Matusak and Jake Hanson also competed today. Matusak came in 21st in the 1500, clocking a time of 3:51.58. Hanson came in 11th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.68. "David did a good job in his preliminary race today," Sandoval said. "Jake ran better than he did yesterday; he's been making progress. He just didn't have enough to make the final."
Torrence will compete in the 1500-meter final on Saturday at 2:24 p.m. (PT).
The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow through Saturday on the campus of Drake University.
