TEMPE, Ariz. -
The California track and field team had a strong start to the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships today in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore Kimyon Broom set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles. The first day, which featured mostly preliminary events, had the majority of the Golden Bears advancing to tomorrow's finals. The Cal men are in fifth after day one with 26.5 points.
Broom set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles when she clocked a 13.17, taking first in the preliminaries. The previous school-record time was 13.43, which was set by Osarhiemen Omwanghe in 2004. Broom entered the Pac-10 Championships with a personal best of 13.46. She became the 14th runner this season to break 13.20, and tied for ninth in the nation in that event.
Sophomore Ryan Young notched a personal best in the javelin. Young took second overall with his personal-best mark of 235-02 (71.67m), which ranks second in school history. Young was already second on Cal's all-time chart in that event with a throw of 70.78m. Junior Martin Maric took fourth in the javelin with a mark of 220-05 (67.19m).
"Kimyon just went for it today; she didn't want to just get to the final," said interim director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "The conditions were great for her. I'm so happy for her. Ryan Young's javelin throw was spectacular. He just missed the school record."
Freshman Cherrelle Garrett also turned in a good time in the 100-meter dash. Garrett took first in the prelims, with a time of 11.44, which tied her personal best. That time also ranks ninth in the nation and is the second best in school history. Garrett's old season-best time of 11.51 was previously the second-best time in school history.
In the 800 meters, senior All-American Alysia Johnson qualified for tomorrow's final when she took first in the prelims with a time of 2:05.73. Her teammates junior Mackenzie Pierce and senior Pippa MacDonald also qualified for the final, with Macdonald PRing at 2:10.49.
In the men's 800 meters, senior David Torrence led the Bears with a personal-best time of 1:49.15, qualifying for tomorrow's final. He will be joined by junior Sean Carey who posted a personal best 1:49.43. Both times for Torrence and Carey were also NCAA regional qualifiers. Although he didn't advance to the final, senior Andres Perezchica also clocked a regional-qualifying time in the 800 at 1:50.36.
Junior Matthew Miller earned a regional-qualifying time in the 3000-meter steeplechase, clocking a 9:00.83.
Senior Craig Kent notched a personal best in the shot put, posting a 58-8.00 (17.88m). His previous PR was 58-4.
Junior Jake Hanson won his heat in the prelims in the 400-meter hurdles. He took second overall with a time of 51.27.
Sophomore Ryan Shuler led the Bears in the pole vault, taking fifth with a mark of 16-6.75 (5.05m). Freshman Kari Karlsson took fourth in the 10,000 meters at 30:19.49.
The Bears conclude the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships tomorrow.
