STANFORD -
The California track and field team gained two more regional qualifiers and won four events at the Payton Jordan Invitational Saturday at Cobb Track & Angell Field on the Stanford campus. Sophomore Kari Karlsson and junior Tracey Stewart were the regional qualifiers, in the 5000 and the triple jump, respectively. The Cal women also secured the top three spots in the women's pole vault. "We had some bright spots, but there were some disappointments, as well," said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "Kari PRed in the 5000, Martin (Maric) and Shane (Vereen) did very well. Kimyon (Broom) won the 100-meter hurdles fairly easily. Tracey (Stewart) looks like she's getting on track in the triple jump. Ryan (Shuler) is starting to put it together with the pole vault. Our half-milers ran well considering it was a windy out there." Karlsson's time of 14:06.61 was also a personal best, while Stewart's mark of 40-6.25 (12.35m) was a season best. Stewart finished in third and Karlsson in 10th. Karlsson wasn't the only Bear to PR on Saturday, as senior Kandi Bonty clocked a personal-best time of 24.23 in the 200. In the women's pole vault, Cal placed first to third with senior Katie Morgan taking top honors with a mark of 13-3.50 (4.05m). Sophomore Allison Stokke came in second (12-11.50, 3.95m) and sophomore Cyrena Giordano took third (12-7.50, 3.85m). Cal's school record holder in the 100-meter hurdles, junior Kimyon Broom won that event once again, crossing the finish line at 13.37. Senior Francis Gadayan won the 800 at 1:50.57, with freshman Sebastian Sam coming right behind him in second at 1:50.71. Sophomore Patrick Kowalsky won the men's shot put with a mark of 55-8.25 (16.97m).
Cal heads to Sacramento for the Sacramento Open next Saturday, while the decathletes and the heptathletes will compete in the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships next weekend in Eugene, Ore. California Results
