California wrapped up competition at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational on Saturday in Los Angeles with a number of strong performances. The Golden Bears earned three new regional qualifiers as junior Kimyon Broom qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore Cyrena Giordano qualified in the women's pole vault and freshman Sebastian Sam qualified in the 800.

"There was a great mix of collegiate athletes and post-collegiate Olympians here," said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "We got tested. Cherrelle (Garrett) ran great in the 100, and she ran well in the 200. We had some season highs and some new PRs. It was a good meet for us."

In her outdoor debut, Broom clocked a time of 13.52, placing fourth overall, to regionally qualify in the 100-meter hurdles. Giordano came in eighth overall in the pole vault with a mark of 12-07.50 (3.85m). She became the third Cal women's pole vaulter to regionally qualify this season. Sam notched a personal best in the 800 at 1:49.85. He joins senior Francis Gadayan as the Cal men's two regional qualifiers in the 800. Sam's time is also Cal's best 800 time this season thus far.

Garrett ran strong in the 100 and the 200 once again. She took second in the 100 with a time of 11.41, and clocked a time of 23.71 in the 200. Garrett also ran the final leg of the regional-qualifying 4x100-meter relay that came in fifth overall (44.56).

Senior Brook Turner earned a new season high in the 400, recording a time of 54.14. Turner, already a regional qualifier, owns the Cal women's best 400-meter time this season. Turner also ran the final leg of Cal's regional qualifying 4x400-meter relay that took third place (3:40.08).

Cal returns to the Bay Area next week for a showdown with Stanford in the annual Big Meet. This year's meet will be held on the Farm at Stanford.
