LOS ANGELES -
California junior Ryan Young set both the school and the meet records in the javelin Friday at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in Los Angeles. Young posted a record-setting mark of 250-10 (76.45m). Young's performance was the highlight of the day for the Golden Bears, as most of the team's top student-athletes will be competing in the second day of the event on Saturday. "This is great for Ryan," said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "He really put it all together here. It's very competitive here and some of the better throwers are here. This proves that he is somebody to be reckoned with at the NCAAs." The previous school record in the javelin was 236-0, set by Paul Teinert in 2006. Young's previous personal best was 235-02, which he set last season and ranked second best in school history. Young's mark on Friday also currently ranks fourth best in the NCAA this season. In the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Emani Truluck clocked a time of 14.31 to take first place in the 100-meter hurdles. Cal returns to the Jackie Joyner-Kersee tomorrow.
