SACRAMENTO -
The California track and field team won 11 events, earned two new NCAA regional qualifiers and had a number of strong performances Saturday at the Sacramento State Elite Invitational at Hornet Stadium. Seniors Katie Morgan and Evelyn Smith were the two new regional qualifiers in the pole vault and the 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Also, senior Kellan Patterson, and sophomores Cherrelle Garrett and Patrick Kowalsky were named the Athletes of the Meet.
For the second straight competition, Garrett won both the 100 and the 200 meters. Already a regional qualifier in both events, Garrett clocked an 11.69 in the 100 and a 24.03 in the 200.
"We had a lot of first-and second-place finishes, so that was good for us," said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "It's a casual meet, but it's still competed very hard. This is a nice tune-up for us for next week at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite."
Patterson took top honors in the 100 with his time of 10.61 and second in the 200 (21.84). Kowalsky finished first in both the shot put and the discus. His mark in the shot put was 53-8.25 (16.36m) and his personal-best mark in the discus was 158-00 (48.15m). Meanwhile, Smith ran a first-place, regional-qualifying time of 59.85 in the 400-meter hurdles and Morgan notched a score of 12-7.5 (3.85m) in the pole vault, good for second place.
"This was a big day for Pat, good for building up his confidence," Sandoval said. "Evelyn ran a very impressive race from start to finish."
The Cal women were especially strong in the sprints, winning the 100, 200 and the 400, as well as the 4x100-meter relay. Senior Brook Turner won the 400 with a time of 54.81. The Bears grabbed all the top-five places in the 200. Sophomore Kayla Dixon clocked two PRs on Saturday, 24.33 in the 200 and 55.29 in the 400.
Senior Jake Hanson took top honors in the men's 400-meter hurdles (51.38), with freshman Ryan Holmes coming in right behind him in second (53.07). The Cal men's 4x400-meter relay took first, crossing the finish line at 3:12.64. The men's pole vaulters secured the top two spots with junior Ryan Shuler taking first at 16-6.75 (5.05m) and senior Andrew Stevens coming in second at 16-0.75 (4.90m).
Cal next heads to Los Angeles for the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational from Friday, April 10, to Saturday, April 11.
