The California track and field team hosted its 2008 home opener at the Cal Multi Event today at Edwards Stadium. In the men's decathlon, redshirt freshman Kyle Mills-Bunje competed for the Golden Bears in the decathlon. Cal's Kevin Kuechler participated unattached. In the women's heptathlon, junior Kristin Holmes and freshmen Dantia Hudson and Sarah Morrison represented Cal.

In the heptathlon, Holmes led the way for the Bears, ending the first day in third place with 2,949 points. Holmes finished first among the Cal trio in three of the four first-day events. In the 200 meters, Holmes came in second overall with a new PR of 24.81, just crossing the line behind Michigan's Bettie Wade. Holmes also took second in the shot put.

Wade took top honors in all four events to take a commanding lead in first with 3,453 points. Stanford's Whitney Liehr is currently in second with 2,977 points.

Mills-Bunje, who wrapped up the first day in third place with 4,087 points, recorded a new personal best in the high jump, notching a 6-5.00 (1.96m), taking third in the event. He also took second in the long jump with a mark of 6.83 meters. Kuechler finished sixth overall with 3,571 points.

Mark Jellison (unattached) is currently in first in the decathlon with 4,629 points. Utah State's John Strang is in second with 4,418 points.

The Bears will compete in the second day of the Cal Multi Event tomorrow at Edwards Stadium. Cal will also compete this week in the Texas Relays from April 3-5 in Austin, Texas, and the Stanford Invitational from April 4-5.
