SACRAMENTO - The California track and field team won six events and earned 13 NCAA regional qualifiers at the Sacramento State Elite meet today at Hornet Stadium. The event winners who regionally qualified were junior Martin Maric (discus), freshman Cherrelle Garrett (100 meters), sophomore Kimyon Broom (100-meter hurdles), junior Jake Hanson (400-meter hurdles), junior Mackenzie Pierce (800 meters) and the women's 4x100-meter relay consisting of Broom, junior Kandi Bonty, freshman Kayla Dixon and Garrett.
Another regional qualifier for Cal was freshman Allison Stokke in the pole vault. Stokke, who set the indoor and freshman records earlier during the indoor season, broke the all-time school record in the pole vault with a mark of 13-3.50 (4.05m). She placed second in the event. The previous mark was 13.2.50 set by Maria Lopez in 2001. Fellow pole vaulter junior Katie Morgan also regionally qualified with her fourth-place mark of 12-11.50 (3.95m).
Broom, who clocked in at 13.56 in the 100-meter hurdles, moves up to second on Cal's all-time list in that category. Garrett's time of 11.66 in the 100 meters was the third best in Cal history. The women's 4x100 relay turned in Cal's seventh best all-time mark in that category with a time of 45.55.
Maric's mark of 193-00 (58.83m) in the discus was the eighth-best score on Cal's all-time charts. Also in the discus, senior Craig Kent regionally qualified with his third-place mark of 173-05 (52.87m). Kent previously regionally qualified in the shot put at last weekend's Hornet Invitational.
One of Cal's Olympic hopefuls, senior Ed Wright also qualified for the NCAA regionals with his mark of 7-0.50 (2.15m) in the high jump, placing fourth.
Sophomore Ryan Young also regionally qualified in the javelin. Young placed sixth in today's event, posting a mark of 206-03 (62.86m).
Cal also got two regional qualifiers in the 110-meter hurdles as senior Thomas Mack and junior Jordan Paul each qualified. Mack clocked in at 13.83 to take second with Paul right behind him in third at 14.25.
Cal next hosts its first meet of the season April 2-3 for the Cal Multis Event at Edwards Stadium. The multis will be one of three meets the Bears will participate in next week. They will also compete in the Texas Relays from April 3-5 in Austin, Texas, and the Stanford Invitational from April 4-5.
