STANFORD - Cal picked up a pair of victories on the second day of the Stanford Invitational Saturday - Kimyon Broom in the 110-meter hurdles and Linda Oseso in the hammer throw - to lead the Golden Bears over the weekend. On Friday, Patrick Kowalsky also won the invitational shot put.
Broom captured the 100-meter hurdles by the narrowest of margins, edging USC's Shalina Clarke by one one-hundreth of a second, 13.38 to 13.39. Broom, the two-time defending Pac-10 champion, also beat Clarke by one place at last year's conference meet, winning in a school-record 13.02 to Clarke's runner-up 13.19.
Oseso and Kiely Smith finished 1-2 in the collegiate hammer, with the throwers posting their best marks on the third of four attempts. Oseso edged her teammate 166-4 to 160-11, and both distances were season bests
Mercedes Marchbanks fouled on four of her six attempts in the triple jump, but among her two legal jumps was a mark of 41-0.50, which not only placed her third in the field but also set a personal best and moved the senior up to seventh Cal's all-time performer list.
Freshman Sofia Oberg finished eighth in a strong 800-meter field, circling the track twice in 2:07.74, the Bears' fastest time in the event in two years.
For the men, freshman Hammed Suleman PR'd in the triple jump with a leap of 49-9.25, finishing fourth. The mark was the best for a Cal athlete in six years, since Bruce Giron and Vincent Ibia both surpassed 52 feet in 2004. Suleman's effort came a day after he long jumped 24-2.25 to place second.
Former Bear Tim Bogdanof won the 110-meter hurdles in an even 14.00, with current Cal hurdlers Aaron Burney (14.56) and Ryan Holmes (14.99) taking fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Golden Bears hit the road next week, with athletes traveling to the Jim Click Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., and the Texas Relays in Austin before returning to Berkeley for the Big Meet vs. Stanford on Saturday, April 10.
