SACRAMENTO - The California track and field team won four events and earned three NCAA regional qualifiers at the Hornet Invitational today at Hornet Stadium. In addition, numerous PRs were set in the opening meet of the 2008 outdoor season.
In the women's 1500 meters, junior Mackenzie Pierce claimed first place with personal-best, regional-qualifying time of 4:27.57. Senior Craig Kent was the other Golden Bear to regionally qualify and take top honors. He posted a mark of 16.91m (55-5.75) in the shot put. Kent also took third in the discus with a mark of 49.76m (163-3).
Cal's other regional qualifier was sophomore Theresa Raub in the pole vault, as she posted a mark of 3.85m (12-7.50) to take third overall. Raub's mark was also a personal best.
Cal's other two first-place finishers were senior Pippa MacDonald and junior Artensia Young. Macdonald got her senior campaign off to a good start with a first-place finish in the 800 (2:12.19). Young won the triple jump with a mark of 12.14m (39-10.00).
Sophomore Joey Thomas took second in the 800, leading the Bears with a personal-best time of 1:51.92. Another second-place finisher for Cal was sophomore Kristen Meister in the high jump, posting a 1.67m 5-5.75.
Junior Kristin Holmes took fifth in the 200, clocking in at 24.96, recording a new personal best. Fellow junior Francesca Weems collected a new PR in the 800 (2:20.15).
Senior Chris Chavez led the way for Cal in the 1500, finishing first among Cal runners and eighth overall with a personal-best time of 3:56.38.
Junior Kellan Patterson and freshman Colin Kennedy each turned in third-place showings. Patterson clocked in at 10.82 in the 100 meters and Kennedy secured a mark of 56.53m (185-05) in the javelin.
The Bears return to Sacramento next weekend for the Sacramento State Nike Elite meet Saturday, March 29, at Hornet Stadium. Cal hosts its first meet of the season April 2-3 for the Cal Multis Event at Edwards Stadium.
