NAMPA, Idaho - The California track and field team won five events at the Blue & Orange Classic Saturday at the Idaho Sports Center to kickoff the 2008 indoor season. The Golden Bears took top honors in the women's 60-meter dash, the women's 60-meter hurdles, the men's mile, the men's 800-meter run and the men's 4x400 relay.

"It was a good first meet, but we still have some rough edges to work out," said interim director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "Still, it was encouraging and we did a lot of good things today. We will come back here next week for a bigger meet with some tougher competition."

For the women, freshman Cherrelle Garrett and sophomore Kimyon Broom claimed first-place finishes. Garrett recorded a time of 7.52 to win the 60-meter dash, while Broom clocked in at 8.68 to claim the title in the 60-meter hurdles.

"Cherrelle won a race that had a good field," Sandoval said. "She has shown that she can be a force to be reckoned with for hopefully her entire career at Cal."

On the men's side, junior Francis Gadayan took first in the 800 with a time of 1:53.90, successfully defending his 800 title that he won at this meet in 2007. Gadayan also finished the men's first-place 4x400 relay, which also consisted of freshman Tojsh Kennedy, junior Sean Carey and junior Jake Hanson. Senior Eric Lee took top honors in the mile with a time of 4:15.1.

Sophomore Kyle Mills-Bunje recorded two personal bests. In the shot put, he notched a 40-2.25 (12.25m) and in the high jump, he tallied a mark of 6-3.25 (1.91m). Junior Jordan Paul also reached a new PR when he clocked in at 7.21 in the 60-meter dash.

Cal returns to Nampa, Idaho next weekend for the United Heritage Invitational & Multi-Event Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2.
