ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - With a heave of 60-9.50 on her third attempt, senior Linda Oseso set a Cal record in the women's weight throw to highlight the Golden Bears' the opening night of competition at the Cherry & Silver Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Junior Angelica Weaver captured the women's 600 meters as the Golden Bears posted several strong performances in their first indoor meet of the year.
Oseso, who won the weight throw by nearly two feet over Kiah Hicks of Colorado State, had a previous best of 59-1.50 during her third-place finish at last winter's MPSF Championships. On Friday, she surpassed that distance twice, including a mark of 59-9.50 on her fifth try. Oseso's record breaks the old school mark of 60-4.50 by Carrie Johnson in 2006.
Winner of the Pan Am Junior title in the 400m hurdles over the summer, Weaver crossed the line in the 600 meters in 1:34.28, edging out Josephine Moultrie of host New Mexico by .40 seconds.
Malaina Payton tied for fifth in the long jump with Grand Canyon's Ann-Marie Duffus with an indoor best of 19-11.50.
In the men's events, Brian Carmichael just missed his indoor PR in the high jump. He tied for second with Washington State's Shawn Swartz as both jumpers cleared 6-10.25. Carmichael's indoor best is 6-11 from last season. Nick Ridge (4th, 6-8.25) and Mike Tracy (8th, 6-6.25) also performed well for the Bears.
Tom Blocker PR'd in the 200m with a time of 22.33, better than the 22.61 he ran in 2010, while Sebastian Sam took fourth in the 600m in 1:21.22.
Several Bears made their collegiate debuts Friday - Jonathan Berry-Smith (200m), Derek White (weight throw), Scott Esparza (weight throw), Gia Trevisan (200), Carisma Lyday (200m) and Taylor Lawson (600m).
Results for other events were not available late Friday night. The meet resumes Saturday morning.
