NAMPA, Idaho - California opened the 2007 indoor season with a strong showing at the Hampton Inn & Suites Classic, winning four events overall. The Golden Bears won the men's 60-meter hurdles, men's 800 meters, women's 800 meters and women's 4x400-meter relay.

Cal junior Thomas Mack ran an 8.07 to lead a sweep of the top three spots in the 60 hurdles. Sophomore Jordan Paul was second (8.31) and junior teammate Steven Conrad was third (8.64). Senior teammate Jonas Hallgrimsson was the fourth Bear in the six-man field and placed sixth (8.97).

Bears sophomore Francis Gadayan won the men's 800 (1:52.69), sophomore teammate Mackenzie Pierce ran in Flight 1 of the women's 800 and had the overall best time (2:10.83), and the Cal quartet of junior Brook Turner, sophomore Evelyn Smith, Pierce and sophomore Francesca Weems, running in Flight 1, won the women's 4x400-meter relay (3:48.93).

The Cal foursome of junior Alex Beitashour, Gadayan, sophomore Jonathan Suddaby and senior Nestor Solis took second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:17.50).

Other Bears won their heats, or flights, in Idaho, including Solis, who captured Flight 1 in the men's 400-meter dash (49.62); his time was second overall. Cal freshman Mercedes Marchbanks won Flight 1 of the women's high jump (5.53 meters, 18-01.75); overall she was sixth. Sophomore teammate Lollie Onipede was fifth overall (5.47 meters, 18-10.00).

 

 

Cal junior Daisy Van Ravenswaay won Flight 1 in the women's weight throw (13.33, 43-09.00), though sophomore teammates Missy Faubus (14.84 meters, 48-08.25) and Emilee Strot (13.62 meters, 44-08.25) had stronger throws in Flight 2. Junior teammate Zak Thomas won Flight 1 of the men's weight throw (16.25 meters, 53-03.75) but was third overall, one spot behind second-placed junior teammate John Ludden (16.86 meters, 55-03.75).

The Bears next compete in the New Mexico Invitational and Zia Classic Multis, Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 25-27, in Albuquerque, N.M.
