CALIFORNIA -
Blair enters his third season at Cal after competing for one year at Marin Junior College...provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the decathlon...as a JUNIOR in 2001 but wasn't selected for the meet...finished fifth at the Pac-10 Championships with a score of 7099...his javelin throw in the Pac-10 multis of 175-5 was a PR...his decathlon score of 7208 at UC Davis made Blair the ninth-best all-time competitor at Cal...came to Cal initially for crew...as a SOPHOMORE in 2000, finished sixth in the decathlon at the Pac-10 Championships with a then-career-best 7008 points, including a then-Cal javelin PR of 168-0...won the junior college state title in the decathlon in 1999 before coming to Cal.
HIGH SCHOOL -
Did not compete in track & field at Napa HS...played soccer for four years, earning all-league and all-city honors.
PERSONAL -
Matthew James Blair was born Dec. 1, 1978, in Oakland...parents are Steven and Carolyn Blair...his older brother, Michael, was a middle distance runner at Cal...his grandfather, William Blair, played football at Cal in the 1990s...sociology major.
