Cal-USC Postgame Notes

  • USC now leads the all-time series, 70-30-5.
  • Cal is now 7-9 in Pac-12 openers since 2002.
  • Today's game marked the first time Cal did not trail at halftime. USC's 13 first-half points were the fewest the Cal defense has allowed in a first half this season, and the fewest since the first half of the UCLA game last year (0).
  • Cal held the USC offense to zero explosive plays (20 or more yards from the line of scrimmage) and have not allowed an explosive play since 13:02 remaining in the second quarter against Ole Miss
  • Devante Downs tied his career high with 14 tackles for the second straight game after also accumulating the total last Saturday vs. Ole Miss and vs. Stanford in 2016.
  • Vic Enwere rushed eight times for 44 yards and one touchdown. It was his second rushing touchdown this season and the 14th of his career. Enwere leads all active Cal players in both rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns with 14 of each.
  • Patrick Laird paced the Bears in rushing with 15 attempts for 82 yards for the second-highest rushing total of his career and his third consecutive game of 78 or more yards rushing.
  • Kanawai Noa recorded a career and game-high 110 yards receiving and had the longest catch of his career with a 38-yader while also tying his career-high with six receptions.
  • Vic Wharton III threw his first career pass attempt. He ended the day with a season-jigh six catches for 86 yards, one shy of his career high in catches. He has caught at least five passes in all four games this season.
  • Jordan Veasy caught his fifth career touchdown, second this season, in the fourth quarter.
  • Cal was 4-for-6 on fourth downs Saturday and is now 10-for-13 on the season.
  • Matt Anderson was 2-for-3 in field goals and 2-of-2 on extra points Saturday for a total of eight points. Anderson now boasts 252 career points and is sixth on the school's career scoring list. Giorgio Tavecchio is fifth (256). Anderson is now within 36 points of Cal's all-time leader Doug Brien (288), while his 46 career field goals made are 10 shy of Brien's 56, and both his 114 extra points and 117 extra--point attempts 44 shy of Tom Schneider's 158 and 161.
  • Josh Drayden registered his first career interception in the second quarter.
  • Malik Psalms forced his first career fumble that Luc Bequette garnered his first career recovery on.
  • Alex Funches notched his second career sack on the game's opening drive, also his second sack in as many games.
  • Cameron Goode notched his second career pass breakup, also his second PBU in as many games.
  • Career-long and team season-long 40-yard kick return for Ashtyn Davis.
  • Elijah Hicks boasted his first career PBU.
  • First career start for Ryan Gibson
  • First career appearance for Michael Saffell, Derrick Clark and Zion Echols with Clark and Echols also recording their first carries.
  • First rushing attempt of the season for Malik McMorris
  • Jeremiah Hawkins appeared in his first game and had his first career catch in the fourth quarter.
