ATLANTA – Cal associate head coach Charmin Smith has been appointed to the WBCA Board of Directors, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association office announced Tuesday morning. Smith will serve as the assistant coach director on the WBCA Board, filling the position vacated by now University of Nevada head coach Amanda Levens.

University of Miami, Florida athletic administrator Jennifer Strawley and University of Texas-Dallas head coach Polly Thomason were also appointed to the board, filling vacancies. The appointments were made by majority vote of the board of directors and Smith, Strawley, and Thomason will be seated at the board's next meeting on Thursday, July 13, in Atlanta. The full WBCA release can be found here.

"We welcome Jenn, Polly and Charmin to the WBCA Board of Directors," said incoming WBCA President Jennifer Rizzotti, head coach at George Washington University. "Our sport is in a very good place due in no small measure to the unity among stakeholders in the women's basketball community. There is no greater example of these collaborative efforts than the WBCA Board of Directors, which is composed of coaches of the game at almost all levels of competition, athletic administrators, and professionals from the public sector who work together for the good of our association and our sport."

Smith, who is now entering her 11th season in Berkeley, is one of 24 voting members on the WBCA Board of Directors, which manages the business and affairs of the association. Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association is the professional association for coaches of women's and girls' basketball at all levels of competition.

A native of Saint Louis, Missouri, Smith herself has found success at all levels of competition both on the court and the sidelines. Smith was a standout player for Stanford from 1993-97, helping the Cardinal to three Final Fours and three Pac-10 titles. Earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in civil and environmental engineering, Smith went on to join the professional ranks, playing in the ABL, Swedish Basketball League, and WNBA, where she spent time with both the Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury.

Smith began her coaching career in 2003 as an assistant coach at Boston College, spending one season in Newton before returning to her alma mater, where she spent three seasons as an assistant to Stanford head coach Tara Vanderveer.

In 2007, Smith joined the Cal staff where she has been instrumental in turning the Golden Bears into one of the premier programs on the west coast and in the nation. During Smith's tenures, Cal has put together six Top-20 recruiting classes, signed 11 McDonald's All-Americans, produced six WNBA draft picks, and reached the NCAA Tournament nine times in ten seasons.

In recognition for her contributions, Smith was elevated to the position of associate head coach prior to the 2012-13 season, in which the Bears reached the Final Four for the first time in program history.
