Rabb, Bird Set For NBA Draft

BERKELEY – For the second year in a row, two Golden Bears have a chance to take their talents to the next level with the annual NBA Draft.

Ivan Rabb and Jabari Bird could both hear their names called Thursday night when the 2017 draft begins at 4 p.m. PT from the Barclays Center in New York. Fans can watch live on ESPN or follow the Bears via @calmensbball on Twitter.

Rabb, who elected to stay on campus for a second season despite projections as a potential lottery pick in 2016, earned AP Preseason All-America honors and was named to the Naimisth, Wooden and Lute Olson Award preseason watch lists this year. He was highly touted as one of the nation's top power forwards, earning Top 10 status for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year award, after leading the Golden Bears in rebounds (10.5 rebounders per game) and averaging 14 points.

"Ivan is an unbelievable rebounder who just has a nose for the ball on both ends," said California head coach Wyking Jones. "He has a great feel for the game with exceptional decision-making in the post, and he's a high-character, wonderful young man."

The two-time All-Pac-12 selection racked up 29 career double-doubles, the second-most by any Cal player in the last 20 seasons, and ranks among the top 10 in all-time Cal records for career rebounding average (T6th, 9.5 rpg), field goal percentage (8th, .554) and blocks (9th, 73).

Rabb could become the 11th Golden Bear selected in the first round, and the second in as many seasons after Jaylen Brown was taken third overall by the Boston Celtics in last year's draft.

Though injuries limited Bird's career, he enjoyed a standout senior season to lead the Bears with 14.3 points per game in 27 appearances while putting up 65 three-pointers, good for eighth among Cal's single-season records. He logged eight 20-point games and 19 double-figure outings to pick up All-Pac-12 honorable mention laurels. Bird wrapped up his career ranked 25th all-time in career points (1,227), fifth for three-pointers (187) and fourth for three-point attempts (504).

"Jabari is one of the premiere shooters in the country," Jones said. "He's also very athletic and explosive when attacking the rim."

"He's one of the nicest and most genuine young men I've ever had the pleasure to coach," Jones added.

Should both Rabb and Bird hear their names called tonight, it would mark the first time in program history that two or more Cal players were selected in back-to-back seasons. California has seen two or more Bears taken in the same draft 11 times in school history.
