Bears Set To Begin WNBA Season
BERKELEY -Â Â The Cal women's basketball team will be well represented when the 21
st season of the WNBA tips off on Saturday, May 13. Former Golden Bear greats Brittany Boyd (2011-15) and Layshia Clarendon (2009-13), have been named to opening day rosters. Boyd and the New York Liberty host the San Antonio Stars at Noon PT at Madison Garden, while Clarendon and the Atlanta Dream visit the Connecticut Sun for a 4 p.m. PT tip.
This is the fifth consecutive season in which the Golden Bears have had multiple players on WNBA opening day rosters. Stanford is the only Pac-12 school with more players rostered to start the 2017 season. As of late, the Bears have been one of the most successful programs in the nation at producing guards for the next level. Cal is one of just four schools over the last five years to have multiple guards selected in the top 10 in the WNBA draft, joined by UConn, South Carolina, and Notre Dame.
Boyd, a two-time All-American and three-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection during her time in Berkeley, is entering her third season in the league after being drafted ninth overall by the Liberty in the 2015 WNBA Draft. A finalist for the Wade Trophy her senior season, Boyd was named to the WNBA All-Rookie team her first year, appearing in 30 games and finishing fifth on the team in scoring despite making only four starts.
During her sophomore campaign in 2016, Boyd led the Liberty in steals (1.5 steals per game) and ranked second on the team in assists (119 assists) while helping New York to first place in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty were picked to finish third in the 2017 AP Preseason WNBA Poll, behind the 2016 WNBA Champions Los Angeles Sparks and runner-up Minnesota Lynx.
Clarendon, who led Cal to the Final Four in 2013 and was a two-time All-America honoree, is entering her fifth season in the WNBA. The ninth overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Clarendon is set to begin her second season with the Dream after spending her first three seasons with the Indiana Fever, highlighted by a trip to the WNBA Finals in 2015.
Traded to the Dream prior to the 2016 season, Clarendon started 32 of 34 games last year, leading the team in assists and ranking second in field goal percentage. The three-time First-Team All-Pac-12 honoree re-signed with the Dream this February after leading Atlanta to the second round of the 2016 WNBA Playoffs. Clarendon recently was named to the WNBA Players Union executive council, elected first vice president in October 2016.
