BERKELEY - In the last regular-season match of their college careers,Â
Filip Bergevi,
Andre Goransson and Florian Lakat played big roles in No. 11 California's 4-0 win over No. 15 Stanford in the Big Slam on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Lakat clinched the match, as he and Goransson both won in singles, and earlier, Lakat and Bergevi clinched the doubles point.
The 14th-ranked Lakat upset the 11th-ranked Tom Fawcett, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, on court one to end the match.
The win secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Pac-12 tournament, as it gave the Golden Bears a 5-1 conference record (and an overall 18-6 record). UCLA's Friday win over USC gave the Bruins the regular-season Pac-12Â title with a 6-0 record, while it dropped the Trojans' conference record to 5-2, which is percentage points behind Cal's record.
Plenty was going on in Berkeley on Saturday, including two Big Slams, as the Cal women fell to Stanford, 4-3, in the first match of the doubleheader at Hellman. The Pac-12 Networks televised both matches. The university held Cal Day – its annual open house – on Saturday.
Â
Back at Hellman, the Bears celebrated their alumni – particularly the late Jim McManus – and Fuddruckers served hamburgers to the large crowd as part of McManus Legends Day. After the men's match, the Bears honored Bergevi, Goransson and Lakat in their Senior Day ceremony.
Â
"It was so special for our team to be part of the Big Slam today," Cal head coach
Peter Wright said. "We had the biggest crowd ever for a tennis match, our women's team had an incredible battle, and our team put on an incredible show. Fuddruckers served over 900 gourmet hamburgers to our fans as part of McManus Legends Day, and Carole McManus (Jim McManus' wife) was on hand cheering for the team and helping serve the hamburgers.
Â
"It was an incredible experience for our seniors on Senior Day, and they played a pivotal role in today's win.
Filip Bergevi and
Florian Lakat helped us build momentum in the match by clinching the doubles on court one. Then
Andre Goransson set the tone in singles by finishing his match first. It's hard to express how much of an impact our seniors have had on the team. We're now setting our sights on the postseason, with the Pac-12 Championship next week followed by the NCAAs in May."
Â
In doubles at the Big Slam, Stanford's Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender posted a 6-3 upset win over Cal's 74th-ranked pair of Goransson and junior
Billy Griffith on court two. The Bears clawed back, as Nishimura and freshman
Bjorn Hoffmann bested Brandon Sutter and David Wilczynski, 6-4, on court three and then the second-ranked duo of Bergevi and Lakat knocked off the 61st-ranked Fawcett and Yale Goldberg, 7-6(2), to give Cal a 1-0 lead.
Â
The 49th-ranked Goransson started singles with a quick 6-4, 6-2 win over Kumar on court two, before Cal junior
J.T. Nishimura held off Brandon Sutter, 7-5, 7-5, on court five. Once Lakat clinched, the remaining three matches were abandoned, producing the 4-0 victory.
Â
The Bears will next play in the Pac-12 Championship tournament from April 26-29 in Ojai, California.
