Bears Set For Two Bay Area Meets This Weekend
- Events: Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival

BERKELEY -Â A week after the California men and women each placed third among Pac-12 schools at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge, the Golden Bears will compete in two Bay Area events - the Stanford Invitational and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. The majority of the Cal competitors will head to Stanford, while a small contingent of distance runners will trek to San Francisco.Â

Tony Sandoval chose to sit his long distance runners from last week's meet so they'd be fully rested for this week's action. Â
Following this weekend's action, Cal will return to The Farm to renew its rivlary with Stanford in The Big Meet.Â
LAST YEAR'S STANFORD INVITATIONAL AND SFSU DISTANCE CARNIVAL
A number of Bears shined at last year's Stanford Invitational.Â
Karsten Wethington won the men's triple jump (50-8.75/15.46m), while
Ashley Anderson won the women's triple jump (42-3.25/12.88m).
Bethan Knights won the 5000m, clocking in at 15:52.91, and
Ashtyn Davis took second in the 110m hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.76, just .01 away from first.Â
Davis, Knights and Anderson either broke into or improved their standing on the school's all-time performance list
Jayla Scholis also set a new PR in the 200m with her time of 24.91 (17th place).Â
At the San Francisco meet, Cal highlights included
Kai Benedict taking eighth in the 1500m (3:53.00).Â
•LAST TIME OUT: DUEL IN THE DESERT
The Big Ten won both the men's and women's competition in Pac-12/Big Ten Invitational last weekend. The Big Ten men beat the Pac-12 men, 393-327, while the Big Ten women beat the Pac-12 women, 409-312. Â
Sandoval was pleased with the Bears' performance, stating there were a lot of good marks for an early-season meet.Â
Ashtyn Davis was victorious in the 110m hurdles, clocking in at 13.89. He also competed in the 200m (14th, 22.51) and as part of the men's 4x100m relay (6th, 41.60).Â
In the women's pole vault,
Lauren Martinez took second with a mark of 4.17m, 13-08.25. Also taking second place was
Peter Simon in the men's shot put (19.19m, 62-11.50) and
Eugene Hamilton III in the 1500 with his time of 3:48.30. Hamilton was also part of Cal's fourth-place 4x400m relay (3:14.91).Â
