BERKELEY - Sophomores Grace Campbell and Olivia Rodberg won both of their matches on the No. 3 court Saturday as the No. 11 Cal beach volleyball team split a pair of duals at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts.

The Bears defeated San Jose State 4-1 before suffering their first setback of the season to Saint Mary's, 3-2.

Campbell and Rodberg, who played the first seven matches of the season as the No. 2 pair, won both of their matches in straight sets Saturday. They went 19-9 as the No. 3 pair last season and were 3-4 to start this year.

"Grace and Olivia are in their second year playing together and they show it," Cal coach Meagan Schmitt said. "They have been playing pretty consistently. They have their interpartner communication down, so it's pretty fluid. They are very comfortable playing together."

The Bears' No. 4 and No. 5 pairs each dropped their first matches of the season. Cal's No. 5 pair of junior Teya Neff and freshman Bridget Gustafson fell to San Jose State's Jamie Hirai and Summer Avery, 17-21, 21-19, 15-12. The loss snapped a streak of 15 sets won to begin the season.

Cal's No. 4 pair of freshmen Iya Lindahl and Nicole Anderson played an intense match against Saint Mary's' Lindsey Calvin and Alexsa Parker, falling 21-17, 23-25, 16-14. The Bears' pair trailed 14-11 in the third set, tied it up, then ultimately fell by two points.

Junior Jessica Gaffney played her first match as part of the No. 1 pair with sophomore Mia Merino against Saint Mary's, falling to the Gaels 21-13, 21-11.

The matches were played during a day-long unrelenting rain at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts.

"We went into today with some new pairs, some illnesses and some poor weather," Schmitt said. "The odds were somewhat stacked against us, but we still had high hopes of leaving with two wins. Any close loss is a tough loss for us."

The Bears (8-1) embark on a challenging road trip next week, beginning with a tri-meet Monday against No. 3 UCLA and No. 6 Long Beach State. Cal will also visit No. 1 USC on Tuesday on the Pac-12 Networks.
