Men's DMR Wins In Day One Of Husky Classic

SEATTLE - California's men's distance medley relay victory highlighted a strong first day of competition at the Husky Classic on Friday. The Golden Bears also enjoyed multiple PRs. 

The relay, consisting of Ellis Newton, Gerardo Castro, John Hogan and Josh Lewis, clocked in at 9:54.82, finishing just a second over second-place Alaska-Anchorage (9:55.86).

In the pole vault, Tyler Brendel notched a personal best of 15'5, and had three close attempts at 16', finishing the day in fifth place. 

"We had some encouraging marks tonight with Cal winning the men's DMR and some PRs," head coach Tony Sandoval said. "Tyler Brendel's PR bodes well for his preparation for the heptathlon at MPSFs."

Adding to Cal's success was Paul Zeiss, who secured a PR in the 5000 with a time of 14:36.92. He ended the day in 12th in Section 2 of the event. 

In the 200-meter dash, Paramveer Chohan came in fourth overall with a personal-best time of 21.92, while Diab Davis came in 11th (22.30), Connor Meech finished 14th (22.34) and Cole Johnson was 20th with a time of 22.69. 

In the weight throw, Matt Esparza finished seventh 59-9.75 (18.23m), while Marshall Godsil 51-7.75 (15.74m) was 20th, and not far behind him was Malik McMorris in 24th at 50-3.50 (15.33m).

Jayla Scholis clocked the Cal women's best time in the 200 meters with a time of 25.26, good for 14th. Taylor Smith finished 16th at 25.39, while Jackie Patterson (20th, 25.46) and Zion Coralles-Nelson (21st, 25.64) were right behind her.  

The Husky Classic concludes tomorrow as the Bears' final tune up before the MPSF Indoor Championships in two weeks.
