BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Cal men's water polo star Luca Cupido added to his growing list of awards and accolades Thursday as the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) named the Golden Bear senior its National Player of the Year for the 2017 season.

Cupido was one of four Cal players to earn national recognition as he was joined on the ACWPC All-America first team by junior attacker Johnny Hooper. Junior center Odysseas Masmanidis was named to the second team and senior goalkeeper Kevin Le Vine earned honorable mention.

After being named Cal's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Player of the Year since 1995, Cupido made more history with Thursday's announcement. He is the first Golden Bear to earn the ACWPC National Player of the Year award since Ivan Rackov was named in 2010. By earning All-America status, Cupido finishes his career as a four-time All-American and three-time first team selection.

The awards are certainly justified for the nation's most versatile and valuable player. The native of Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy and 2016 Olympian scored 58 goals to lead the MPSF and entered the NCAA Tournament with team-highs in steals (46) and field blocks (18). In his final match as a Golden Bear, Cupido scored once and nearly led his team to a NCAA semifinal win over USC despite having to receive stitches after the match for an injury sustained during the second half.

Cupido wasn't the only Golden Bear to earn recognition after a season in which Cal finished with a 20-4 overall record. Hooper landed his third All-America award and second-straight first team honor after a season in which he scored 47 goals despite missing time at the beginning of the season to recover from a busy summer spent with the U.S. National Team. The native of Los Angeles entered the NCAA Tournament as Cal's leader in assists with 49 and enjoyed another standout season as one of the nation's most electrifying scorers.

Masmanidis also returned to Berkeley after a summer spent competing internationally and the native of Athens, Greece joins Hooper as a three-time All-American. Cal's man in the middle scored 40 goals on the season and was a force when it came to putting the Bears on the power play as he entered the final match of the season with a team-high 49 ejections earned. Masmanidis also came up huge when the moment called for a big effort as his overtime goal against Stanford in the third-place match of the MPSF Tournament played a pivotal role in helping the Bears reach the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year.

Le Vine's All America nod is his first but the award provides a fitting end to an incredible senior season for Cal's man in the cage. Stepping into the starting role for the first time as a Golden Bear, Le Vine rose to the task and anchored Cal's defense throughout the season. He provided one of the most memorable performances of the season when he stopped 18 shots in a 6-3 win over USC on Senior Day at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The native of El Cajon, Calif. averaged 11.49 saves per game and compiled a goals against average of 7.89 in his final collegiate season.
