Boyd Named Pac-12 Goalkeeper Of The Year

Boyd Named Pac-12 Goalkeeper Of The Year

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference announced its 2017 yearly honors on Tuesday and six members of the Cal women's soccer team were recognized for their performance, headlined by senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd, who was voted the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year by the conference head coaches. Boyd and senior center back Indigo Gibson earned First Team All-Conference honors while sophomore striker Abi Kim was a Second Team All-Pac-12 selection. Redshirt senior Kelly Fitzgerald and freshman defender Emily Smith were Third Team All-Conference selections while Smith was also named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team, along with classmate Luca Deza.

This is the second consecutive year the Bears have had six or more players earn Pac-12 end-of-season honors and the second time in the last three seasons that multiple Cal players have earned First Team All-Pac-12 recognition.

The first player in program history to be named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year, Boyd has put together a stellar senior season in which she continues to re-write the record books. The Seattle product leads the conference and ranks seventh in the nation this season with an overall save percentage of .894, including an impressive .921 mark in Pac-12 play. A 2016 NSCAA All-Region Selection, Boyd has 10 shutouts this season and 36 clean sheets for her career, the most in program history and third all-time in conference history. Boyd is also Cal's all-time saves leader with 290 saves during her time in Berkeley, including a career-high 14 stops in her last outing against top-ranked Stanford. Boyd's 0.465 goals against average ranks second in the conference and currently stands as the best single-season mark by any Cal goalkeeper since 1985.

Recognized twice this season as the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week, this is Boyd's first time earning First Team All-Conference recognition and the third All-Pac-12 honor of her career. Boyd earned Second Team All-Pac-12 accolades in 2015 and 2016, the first Cal player since Alex Morgan to earn First or Second Team recognition in three consecutive seasons.

Joining Boyd as a First Team All-Conference selection, Gibson has been a dominant presence for the Bears defense and is the only field player to play every minute for Cal this season. Voted the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on September 19, 2017, Gibson has led the Bears backline to 10 shutouts this season and the tenth-best goals against average in the nation. Cal has allowed a total of 9 goals this season, one of only three teams in all of Division I soccer that has not conceded multiple goals in any game this year. A member of the Under-23 United States Women's National Team, Gibson has appeared in 82 matches during her Cal career, making 68 starts. This is the first All-Conference honor for Gibson, who has also spent time with the Canadian youth national teams.

Cal's leading scorer this season with seven goals, Kim was named to the Second Team All-Pac-12. An All-Freshman honoree last season, Kim's seven goals are tied for ninth in the conference this season and more than doubled her goal total from 2016. A member of the Under-20 United States' Women's National Team, Kim was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week following the opening weekend of the 2017 season when she scored three goals and set up the game-winning penalty in Cal's 2-1 victory over No. 24 Santa Clara. The sophomore striker from Vashon, Washington has three-game winning goals on the year and three goals in Pac-12 play.

A Third Team All-Conference selection, Fitzgerald has been instrumental in the Bears midfield, tallying one goal and three assists while also making considerable contributions on the defensive end. A redshirt senior from Laguna Niguel, California, Fitzgerald converted the game-winning penalty kick in the 89th minute against Santa Clara and assisted the game winning goal in matches against Oregon and Oregon State. Fitzgerald is a tri-captain for the Golden Bears and has appeared in 70 career matches with 58 starts, missing time each of the last two seasons due to injury. This is the first career All-Conference honor for Fitzgerald, who earned Pac-12 All-Academic recognition in 2016.

Fitzgerald is joined on the All-Conference Third Team by Smith, a freshman defender from Los Gatos, California. One of only six players to start every game this season, Smith is third on the team in total minutes played and has been a steady force on the Bears backline. Ranked No. 3 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Midseason Freshman Rankings and a member of the U.S. squad for the 2016 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup, Smith also earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors.

A rookie midfielder from Belmont, California, Deza also earned All-Freshman recognition, the second consecutive year the Golden Bears have had multiple All-Freshman selections. Deza leads the Bears with four assists this season and has also tallied two goals, both of which were game-winners.

Ranked 19th in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, the Golden Bears finished fifth (13-5-1, 6-4-1 Pac-12) in the Pac-12 and have earned an NCAA Tournament bid for the 14th consecutive season. Cal will host Bay Area rival Santa Clara in the First Round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, with kickoff slated for 1:30 p.m. PT on Saturday at Edwards Stadium.

Tickets for Saturday's NCAA match are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and youth (grades K-12). Admission is $5 for all Cal students with a valid student ID. For more information on tickets, please call 1-800-GO-BEARS.
