Cal heads to Athens, Ga., this weekend where the Golden Bears will attempt to post a number of individual and relay NCAA qualifying marks while facing some of the top teams in the country. Cal was the NCAA runner-up last season, and the meet also features host Georgia (4th at 2017 NCAA's), Michigan (11th) and Virginia (12th). In addition, Cal's men's team will make the cross-country trip and Harvard (diving), UCLA (diving) and Auburn (men only) will be present.

Last year, Cal prevailed in the team standings, ahead of Georgia, Auburn, Virginia, Florida State, Michigan and Harvard. The Bears won eight events, including four of five relays. Individually, Kathleen Baker claimed the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley, Noemie Thomas touched first in the 200 butterfly, and Amy Bilquist was the winner of the 100 back.

• BEARS DOWN NEVADA IN HOME DUAL; DIVERS PERFORM WELL IN ARIZONA
Cal most recently competed the weekend of Nov. 17-19, with the Golden Bear swimmers defeating Nevada, 127-65, at home on Nov. 17, and the divers participating at the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz. In the dual, Cal won 10 of 11 events and set season bests in five races - 200 free (Abbey Weitzeil, 1:46.62), 1000 free (Katie McLaughlin, 10:00.28), 400 IM (Sarah Darcel, 4:15.03), 200 free relay (1:32.35) and 400 medley relay (4:43.82). In Arizona, freshman Briana Thai moved into Cal's all-time top 10 with her scores on all three events - 3rd on 1-meter (289.75), 8th on 3-meter (300.10) and 3rd on platform (256.60).

• KATHLEEN BAKER, ABBEY WEITZEIL ON NCAA A LIST
Junior Kathleen Baker and sophomore Abbey Weitzeil have already punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships, having posted NCAA "A" qualifying times at the USA College Challenge the weekend of Oct. 21-22. Baker has reached the level in three events - all wins at the USA Challenge meet - in the 100 back (50.62), 200 back (1:50.62) and 200 IM (1:53.24). Baker is the defending NCAA champion in all three races. Weitzeil, meanwhile, touched first in the 50 free in 21.63. Weitzeil's 50 free as well as Baker's 100 back and 200 IM currently rank as the fastest in the country.

• SUMMER SWIMS AROUND THE GLOBE
A number of Golden Bears kept busy over the summer representing their respective national teams in competition. Kathleen Baker earned three medals at the World Championships - silver in the 100m back, bronze in the 200m back and gold on the world-record-setting 400m medley relay, but she wasn't the only Cal swimmer in the pool. Robin Neumann (Netherlands) was also at Worlds in Budapest, while recent Cal grad Farida Osman (Egypt) claimed a bronze medal in the 50-meter fly. At the World University Games in Taipei, Katie McLaughlin (USA) earned three relay medals and reached the finals in the 50m and 100m fly, and Sarah Darcel (Canada) finaled in both the 200m IM and 400m IM. Finally, senior Maija Roses (USA) claimed gold medals in the 100m and 200m breast and on the 400m medley relay at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

• CAL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS WITH TERI McKEEVER
Following Cal's dual meet against North Carolina State Nov. 4, more than 200 people, including dozens of alumnae and their families, remained at Legends Aquatic Center for a special ceremony celebrating Teri McKeever's 25 years as the Bears' head coach. Chancellor Carol Christ and Director of Athletics Mike Williams, along with current swimmers, a former assistant coach and a pair of alums, all feted McKeever before long-time supporter Michael Go announced the formation of the Teri McKeever Swimming Scholarship, which will be awarded to a deserving student-athlete beginning next year.
