Sivakumar Named Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year
BERKELEY –California'sÂ
Aravind Sivakumar culminated the end of his collegiate career with the same academic verve that signified his time as a Golden Bear, as he was name the Pac-12 Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced Friday.
The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
The Cupertino, Calif., native, continues a 3.90 grade point average (GPA) in computer science and is a two-time first team Pac-12 All-Academic selection. The senior midfielder is also a two-time CoSIA Academic All-District selection and was recently named to the first team this year. As a First Team All-District member, Sivakumar is eligible for CoSIDA's Academic All-America Team, which will be announced on Dec. 7.
"This is an incredible and well deserved award for Aravind," said head coach
Kevin Grimes. "He epitomizes what all coaches would want in a student-athlete. He's an outstanding student first and foremost. On the field, Aravind has special talent and skill that is combined with a work ethic that is second to none."
Sivakumar maximized his time off the field by getting in-field experience in the technology industry, in which both his parents work. He spent this past summer interning at Twitter coding for the ad targeting team.
The senior closed the year starting all 17 games, recording one goal, two assists and 15 shots, five of them on goal. Sivakumar tallied his lone goal of the year in the First Round of NCAA Tournament on Thursday as Cal closed the 2017 season with a tough 2-1 loss to USF.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletics accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in voting for the award.
