Stunt Squad
Creating card stunts involves an intricate process overseen by Cal's Rally Committee.

Stunt Squad

Card stunts have been a Cal football tradition for more than 100 years. In fact, the time-honored practice debuted at a 1910 rugby match between Cal and Stanford with two stunts – the Stanford Axe and a blue C on a white background.

Over the ensuing decades, stunts have certainly evolved with computer programs now used in their design. Still, the dedicated members of Rally Committee, which oversees the activity, put in many hours each week sorting cards and setting up the stunts for fans to enjoy.

CalBears.com recently caught up with Sophie Beirne, the 2017-18 Rally Committee chairwoman, and Dean Lewis, who serves as director of stunts. Together, they talk about the work it takes to pull the stunts together for each home football game and the enjoyment they feel when alumni recognize what they contribute to the gameday atmosphere.
