Bears Chosen For USA College Challenge
BERKELEY - Five Golden Bears will get a chance to test their mettle against a group of all-stars from the U.S. National Team when they swim off in the second USA College Challenge Oct. 21-22.
The short-course yards event, which will pit a select team from the Pac-12 against members of Team USA, will be held at USC and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks. Tickets are available to purchase through
usaswimming.org.
Representing the Golden Bears for the Pac-12 will be junior
Kathleen Baker, junior
Katie McLaughlin, sophomore
Maddie Murphy, freshman
Robin Neumann and sophomore
Abbey Weitzeil, with
Teri McKeever serving as one of the team's coaches.
Baker is the reigning CSCAA National Swimmer of the Year after winning three individual events at last year's NCAA Championships – 100- and 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley. She earned a pair of medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and claimed three more medals at the 2017 FINA World Championships this past summer.
McLaughlin was runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly at 2017 NCAAs and picked up three medals on relays at the 2017 World University Games, while Murphy placed fifth in the 50-yard free at last year's NCAA meet and was part of Cal's national championship 200 free relay.
Neumann was a part of the Netherlands' 2016 Olympic team where she swam the 200-meter free and on the 800 free relay. Weitzeil, meanwhile, was a two-time medalist at the 2016 Olympics, was a part of the U.S. team at the 2017 World Championships, and was an NCAA finalist in the 50 and 100 free last season.
McKeever, beginning her 26th year at the helm, served as head coach of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team and has directed the Golden Bears to four NCAA titles since 2009.
The USA College Challenge will feature a similar format to the successful Duel in the Pool events, and a running score will be kept throughout the dual-meet competition, combining the points earned by both women and men to determine a winner. In last year's USA College Challenge, the USA Swimming National Team defeated the Big Ten Conference All-Stars in Indianapolis.
