“Hi-Five” TJ Moves Cal Past Harvard

BERKELEY – The hashtag #TJALLDAY got some new light on Sunday.

Senior Christian Thierjung elevated his social media moniker to a new level after scoring five goals at Goldman Field to help California (3-2-1) decisively rout Harvard 6-2 and keep its undefeated home streak alive (3-0-1 in Berkeley, Calif.).

Thierjung opened the market in the 25' receiving a double assist from Ugo Rebecchini and Jose Carrera-Garcia that found its sweet spot in the back corner of the net. That ignited action from Spencer Held who connected before the half on a perfect setup from Sam Ebstein.

The second half was #TJALLDAY with the Dove Canyon, Calif., native displaying aggressive moves to strike one in during the 49', 56', 71' and 74', before he departed the game. Carrera-Garcia added another assist to Thierjung's scoring frenzy with a pass to Simon Lekressner who got it into Cal's All-Pac-12 Preseason selection.

Thierjung, who finished as the team's leading scorer a season ago (nine goals), reclaimed that place after today's performance where he pelted 10 of Cal's 23 shots. He totals seven goals, which leads the conference, through six games after scoring one during the Golden Bears' 2-1 win over Omaha and in the home-opener against Saint Mary's.

Harvard (2-3-1) proved formidable at times recording its first goal almost immediately after Thierjung's second-half opener. Cesar Farias put one in during the 49th minute and Matthew Glass added the following during the 65' for the Crimson.

"We definitely know what Harvard's going through in playing an early game on a Sunday," said head coach Kevin Grimes of the Crimson who loss to No. 25 Stanford on Friday. "We just had that same experience a few weeks ago. It's a tough recovery.

"Having said that, they're an outstanding team and obviously well coached," he continued. "We needed to be at our best today to be a great team."

While Cal has defended its home front tenaciously, the Bears prepare for a quartet of road games. The first battle comes against No. 13 UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 24 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
