Cal Swimmers Continue To Haul In Medals

RIO DE JANEIRO – Another day, more medals for Cal swimmers.

The Golden Bears brought home at least one medal for the fifth time in six days of swimming competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics on Friday, as 35-year old Anthony Ervin won the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle while Nathan Adrian took the bronze.

Ervin, swimming in his third Olympics, became the oldest swimmer ever to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games. His winning time of 21.40 edged France's Florent Manaudou by one-hundreth of a second. Adrian finished third in a time of 21.49.

Ervin now has two gold medals at the 2016 Games while Adrian has a gold and two bronze medals. The Golden Bears have amassed 13 medals – including six gold medals – during the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Former Cal swimmer Tom Shields swam in his first-ever Olympic final on Friday, finishing seventh in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 51.73.

On the women's side, incoming Cal freshman Abbey Weitzeil advanced to the semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle, but did not place in the top-eight and won't compete in Saturday's final. She also anchored the United States' 400-meter medley relay team during prelims and helped the Americans qualify first for Saturday's final. Rising junior Noemie Thomas helped Canada qualify second.

On the volleyball court, former Cal star Carli Lloyd helped the United States improve to 4-0 in Group Play with a 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 victory over Italy. The U.S., which has already qualified for the quarterfinals, plays China on Sunday.

Women's soccer star Alex Morgan saw her Olympic run came to a surprisingly premature end as the U.S. fell to Sweden on penalty kicks (4-3). The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, with the only American goal coming from Morgan, her second of the 2016 Games. She scored at the 77-minute mark to tie the game and help force overtime. Morgan, who won a gold medal for Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics, led the Americans with seven shots.

Cal rising junior Natan Wegrzycki-Szmczyk advanced to the semifinals of the Single Sculls competition and finished sixth in his heat with a time of 7:15.61 over the 2000-meter course. The 2016 Pac-12 Men's Athlete of the Year will participate in the B-Final on Saturday.

Former Cal golfer Byeong-Hun An completed the second round of the golf competition and is in a tie for 18th place halfway through the event. He carded a 1-over par 72 on Friday and is at 2-under for the tournament.

Former Cal star John Mann and rising junior Luca Cupido each scored a goal for the U.S. men's water polo team, but it was defeated by Montenegro 8-5. Cupido, who now has three goals for the Olympics, also had three steals and two field blocks against Montenegro. Team USA completes Group Play on Sunday against Italy.

Meanwhile, Cal sophomore Lily Zhang had her second Olympic experience come to an end as the United States lost 3-0 to Germany in the first round of the team competition. Zhang was beaten by Germany's Xiaona Shan, 11-9, 11-4, 11-2. Earlier this week, Zhang advanced to the third round of the singles competition.
