Prenot Surges to Silver as Bears Take Trio of Medals

RIO DE JANEIRO – Josh Prenot surged to a silver-medal finish in the 200 breaststroke to highlight a three-medal day for the #CalBearsInRio, all from members of Cal Aquatics and Team USA. Nathan Adrian added a bronze in the 100 freestyle, and though Missy Franklin did not swim in the 800m free relay final, her contribution in the prelims helped the United States qualify as the top seed.

Prenot, who completed his collegiate eligibility this spring, entered the 200 breaststroke final as the American record holder and No. 3 seed in the event. He finished second in the event, charging through the last 100 meters to pass Russia's Anton Chupkov for silver with a 2:07.53 time, just behind Kazakhstan's Dmitriy Balandin's 2:07.46. Prenot set the American record in 2:07.17 in June at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Adrian's 47.85 in the 100 freestyle wasn't enough to defend his 2012 title, but he picked up a sixth career medal with a third-place finish. Australia's Kyle Chalmers clocked in at 47.58 and Belgium's Pieter Timmers was second at 47.80. At the London Games, Adrian became the first American man since Matt Biondi in 1988 to win Olympic gold in the 100 free. Earlier in the week, Adrian anchored the gold medal-winning freestyle squad.

Though Franklin did not swim in the 800m final, she helped Team USA earn the top seed earlier in the day with a 7:47.77 prelim time. The four-member finals team finished in 7:43.03 to best Australia (7:44.87) and Canada (7:45.39). The U.S. women have won the event all but once since the event was introduced in 1996, losing out only in 2008.

Incoming women's swimming freshman Abbey Weitzeil finished fourth in her 100 free semi session and eighth overall at 53.53 to qualify for the 100 free finals, set for Thursday at 6 p.m.

Men's swimming's Jacob Pebley (1:54.92) and Ryan Murphy (1:55.15) are on to the 200 backstroke finals, going fourth and fifth, respectively, in Wednesday's semifinal sessions. Pebley was third in semifinal 2, and Murphy led the semifinal 1 heat. The duo will look to add another pair of medals to the United States' total on Thursday evening.

The aquatic success started early in the day as the men of Cal water polo combined for two goals to propel the United States to its first win in Rio, 6-3 over France. John Mann notched his first goal of the tournament, which was also the team's first goal of the day. Cupido scored his second goal of the tourney and also added an assist, a steal and a field block to his Wednesday performance. The Bears are back in the pool Friday against Montenegro at 7:40 a.m. for more Group B action.

Carli Lloyd and the United States women's volleyball squad earned a quarterfinal berth and took sole leadership of Pool B after downing previously undefeated No. 6 Serbia (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19). Lloyd played in all four sets. The Americans are 3-0 in group play and are the first team to earn a ticket to the knockout quarterfinal round on Tuesday, Aug. 16, but first will take on Italy on Friday, Aug. 12.

Rugby's Danny Barrett started both matches for Team USA on Wednesday, tallying a try in each contest. The Americans lost to Fiji, 24-19, but came back strong with a 24-12 victory over Brazil. The strong finish against Brazil guarantees the United States a shot at ninth place on Thursday when the squad faces Spain at 9 a.m. Barrett's three tries and 15 points in Rio are second among the United States team.
