Kelly Knapp joins Team USA in Rio as a manager for the field hockey squad. Knapp's career as a student-athlete in Berkeley was replete with honors, including the NorPac Defensive Player of the Year award in 2004, when she led all Division I goalkeepers with 1591:51 minutes played. Her goals-against average led the NorPac Conference for three straight seasons (2002-04), and Knapp played every minute of every game during those three seasons. She graduated from Cal in 2005 with a degree in sociology and served as the head coach of Westview High School in San Diego, Calif. before returning to Berkeley as a coach.
Laurel Korholz, Women's Rowing
A former All-Pac-12 rower at Cal, Korholz has enjoyed tremendous success as an athlete and coach for Team USA. She appeared in three Olympic Games, including winning a silver medal with the Varsity 8 in 2004. Since joining the Team USA coaching staff in 2005, Korholz has led the quadruple sculls to the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and won gold at the 2015 World Championships. Last year, Korholz was named to the Pac-12 All-Century Team.
Dr. David Kruse, Men's Gymnastics
California alum Dr.
David Kruse has always worked among the best and that practice has continued long after his Golden Bear days. An NCAA gymnastics champion and All-American several times over while at Cal, Kruse has been named Team USA's men's gymnastics team physician for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The selection should come as no surprise for the native Floridian as he's also been in that capacity for the U.S. Men's National team since 2008. Kruse also competed at the international level for the U.S. National team before attending medical school, but chose to specialize in sports medicine to stay connected with his childhood passion. He also works as the team physician for the OC Blues FC, LA Reign and is an associate physician at UC-Irvine. Kruse was a men's gymnastics captain for the Golden Bears and now has his own practice in Orange, Calif.
Chris Oeding, Women's Water Polo
Oeding is serving as an assistant coach for the USA women's water polo team, which enters the Olympic Games ranked No. 1 in the world. Oeding had a decorated playing career in Berkeley, leading the Golden Bears to a pair of NCAA championships and being named the NCAA Player of the Year in 1992. Oeding was also a three-time All-American and played in two Summer Olympics – in 1996 and 2000. Oeding has had a wildly successful coaching career in the community college ranks – leading Long Beach City College to six state championships while coaching both the men's and women's teams. He also coached at Orange Coast College, where he twice was named Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year.
JT Okada, Men's Gymnastics
California men's gymnastics assistant coach
JT Okada is a part of history. Okada, who also sits at the helm of South Africa's national team, will expand his role to the country's Olympic head coach for the 2016 Rio Games. The Golden Bear alum sat on the sidelines as an announcer for the Cal men's gym team as a student to eventually call the shots from that same position. Okada, heading into his fourth season with the Bears, coached 2016 graduate and former Cal gymnast
Ryan Patterson along his journey to Olympic qualification. For Patterson and Okada, it will be their Olympic debuts, for South Africa it will be the nation's first appearance in the men's competition in more than 50 years. The anthropology major was also the president of National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs while a student and served as an instructor at Golden Bears Gymnastics prior to his full-time position with the team. A well-rounded individual, Okada worked as the Golden Bears' volunteer sports psychologist as well.
