Cal-Arizona Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Cuonzo Martin

Opening statement

"Good win by Arizona. They fought hard and turned it up in the second half. I thought we did some good things in the first half, but when Ivan got in foul trouble it kind of changed the momentum for us in the second half, so just have to keep plugging away."

On Arizona succeeding against the Cal defense in the second half

"I just think simply that guys who were defending the ball, didn't take pride in defending. I think that's what happened in the second half. You have to be aggressive. You have to be assertive. Just watching I think that we did a good job, perimeter guys just moving their feet and keeping the ball in front of you. I think it was that simple."

On stalled offensive production late in the second half

"I thought that we had good movement, just the shots didn't go. Guys have to make the plays. I thought we missed some at the rim. I thought King (Okoroh) did some good things offensively just couldn't get the ball to go."

On next steps taken headed into deeper conference play

"Well the biggest one is you have to defend and continue to take pride in defending the ball. I didn't think we did a good job in the second half containing the dribble. Offensively, it's one thing to say, 'Guys, step up.' I think you have your post-up guy, your catch-and-shoot guy, but you're not going to make a guy that's not a scorer become a scorer. I think that's where you need Ivan on the floor because he's a big part of our offense, whether he's receiving the ball or not. I think we'll be fine, we have to do a better job on defense."

On Ivan's double-double game

"I thought he did a good job. I was surprised he had a career-high 16 rebounds, but I thought he's had many rebounding nights like that. I expect Ivan, with his ability to rebound, to be around 15 or 16 a night. Just being assertive, we just have to find ways to keep him out of foul trouble."

Senior Forward Jabari Bird

On what kind of plays are needed to be able to win

"Just stops. We couldn't stop them for a small stretch of the game and they were able to push the lead up to nine, and then we just didn't fight back. I take responsibility for that, being a senior, I have to be better as a leader on the court. It's a quick turnaround and we'll be back at it on Sunday."

On things Arizona did to succeed against the Cal defense

"They were aggressive and made plays. We just weren't aggressive on defense. They we able to get comfortable and get into a flow, and we just didn't have an answer for it."

On chemistry between him and Charlie

"Yeah, definitely (chemistry is building). I've only played half the season so our chemistry has definitely grown these past two games. Charlie is a great young point guard and he made two great plays in transition to find me."

Sophomore Forward Ivan Rabb

On how defense struggled against Arizona shooters

"I think as bigs it's our job to make their job a little bit easier because they have it tough, but when they struggle, we struggle as well, so we have to make sure that we're on the same page as well."

On his double-double performance

"I just wanted to be aggressive and assert myself because we needed everything tonight to win. Obviously foul trouble played me tonight, but I feel like if I was on the floor a little bit longer you never know what would have happened because I definitely had it rolling tonight."

On how he's able to stay in a flow after coming in and out of the game (due to foul trouble)

"Honestly it doesn't bother me that much, I just come in and I'm trying to score the basketball so I'm trying to score and looking to rebound so I'm active and I'm able to get right back into the flow of the game.

Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller

On the game

"It is a big way to start, especially when your first game is on the road. If you bring a veteran team to the arena with you -- guys who have been through the wars of conference play -- I think that's one thing, but we brought a bunch of guys into tonight's game who have never played a conference game. They don't know the intensity or have any familiarity of the size around the basket. In the Pac-12, you look at size game in and game out. So I think for us to play through some of that unfamiliarity and get the win, we're excited about it. Road wins are hard. Road sweeps are coveted, and now we have the chance to play for that against Stanford."

On low turnovers against Cal

"One of the reasons we were in the game was because we only had 4 turnovers at the half. We had quite a few shots that we missed because of the size of Cal, but we were missing 100 percent shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. We played through it. We hung in there. Going into halftime only down six was a win for us, because we definitely could have been down by more.  We were stuck down by six points for what seemed like forever, missing shots and our defense really breaking down. In the second half, I think we played a more complete game, and I have to give Kobi Simmons a lot of credit—part of why we won was that he set the tone for our team in the first 8-10 minutes of the second half. He really took over. Most of his six field goals came in that time and the baskets he got were huge for our team to give us a sense of confidence in our play."

On return of Parker Johnson-Cartwright

"We would not have won if Parker didn't play. He had four assists, zero turnovers and three defensive rebounds—just the fact that he could play 20 minutes was amazing."
