BERKELEY - The Cal men's swimming and diving team makes a trip to the Central Valley this weekend to compete in the Pacific Invitational hosted by Pacific. The Bears will swim in the Saturday portion of the two-day event with racing beginning at 10 a.m.

Cal and Pacific met on Oct. 7 in the first dual meet of the season for both teams and the Bears emerged with the 172-52 victory. Freshman Michael Jensen won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle and was named National Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com. Nick Norman was also honored as wins in the 500 and 1,000 free earned him the title of Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week.

The Bears competed at the Pacific Invitational in 2015 and walked away with two individual event wins as Connor Hoppe won the 100 breaststroke and Kyle Coan claimed victory in the 200 free.
Next up for Cal is a trip to Stanford on Nov. 2 for the annual Triple Distance Meet. The meet will be streamed live by the Cardinal on Pac-12.com as well as on Twitter.

• LAST TIME OUT
Cal won every race in its first dual meet of the year to earn a 172-52 victory over Pacific. Nick Norman (1,000, 500 free), Michael Jensen (100, 200 free)  and Justin Lynch (50 free, 100 fly) each won two races while Andy Song (100 back), Connor Hoppe (100 breast), Andrew Seliskar (200 fly), Mike Thomas (200 back, posted top time in 200 IM) and Hunter Cobleigh (200 breast) each won one.

• A SUMMER TO REMEMBER
What began at U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha carried right through the 2016 Rio Olympics as Cal men's swimmers made an unforgettable impact on the world's biggest stage. Cal swimmers brought home 11 medals as Nathan Adrian (two gold, two bronze), Ryan Murphy (three gold), Anthony Ervin (two gold), Tom Shields (one gold) and Josh Prenot (one silver) combined with Jacob Pebley, Damir Dugonjic (Slovenia), Long Gutierrez (Mexico) and coaches David Durden and Yuri Suguiyama (United States) to make up one of the most memorable groups of Cal Olympians in history.

• WORLD RECORD HOLDER
Ryan Murphy didn't return to Berkeley with just medals, he also brought with him a piece of swimming history. By swimming the leadoff leg of the 400-meter medley relay in 51.85 seconds, he broke Aaron Peirsol's world record of 51.94 in the 100 backstroke that Peirsol set in 2009. Murphy is the seventh Cal men's swimmer in history to set a world record and the first to do it since Nathan Adrian helped the United States' 400-meter freestyle relay team do it at the 2008 Olympics.

• STAYING CONSISTENT
By finishing second at the 2016 NCAA Championships, the Bears ensured their seventh-straight season in the top two under head coach David Durden. Ryan Murphy won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke for the third consecutive year and was named the CSCAA co-National Swimmer of the Year along with former high school teammates Caeleb Dressel of Florida and Joe Schooling of Texas. Josh Prenot capped a phenomenal college career with his first NCAA title, outdueling Texas' Will Licon to win the 400 individual medley.

• 7 STRAIGHT YEARS AMONG NCAA TOP 2
After placing second at the 2016 NCAA Championships, Cal carries a remarkable run of success with it into the 2016-17 season. Head coach David Durden's squad has finished first or second in the nation in each of the last seven seasons and has never placed lower than fourth in his nine seasons as coach. During that run, the Bears own three NCAA championships (2011, 2012, 2014) and two Pac-12 titles (2013, 2014).

• PAC-12 PROWESS
Even with several top swimmers competing at another event, Cal left a major mark on the 2016 Pac-12 Championships. Then-freshman Andrew Seliskar was named Swimmer of the Meet after winning six titles during the meet. The McLean, Va. native won individual titles in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 fly while also helping the Bears win the 400 free, 800 free and 400 medley relays. Connor Hoppe (100 breast) and Justin Lynch (100 fly) added individual championships while Kyle Coan, Long Gutierrez and Trent Williams all contributed to relay victories.

• NEW FACILITY A REALITY
The new Legends Aquatic Center, a 52-meter training pool with a bulkhead and diving tower, locker rooms and a team room, officially opened in mid-October. The facility, which was completely funded by private donations, will primarily host training sessions, giving Cal Aquatics student-athletes more flexibility with class scheduling and opening up additional time for campus use at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Spieker will continue to be the pool used for the vast majority of competitions.

• NEW FACES
Head coach David Durden welcomes 11 new swimmers along with freshman diver Connor Callahan in 2016-17. Transfer Matthew Josa joins the Bears after earning Division II NCAA Swimmer of the Year honors in 2015 and, after taking 2016 off to train for Olympic Trials, he posted the fastest prelim time and made the final of the 100 butterfly at Trials. And, he isn't the only impact newcomer to join the Bears, with Karl Arvidsson, Spencer Farrar, Shane Forker, Ivan Grigorishin, Michael Jensen, 'Aukai Lileikis, Pawel Sendyk, Andy Song, Jack Xie and Ethan Young all adding plenty of talent to an already-deep squad.
