Goransson Falls in Indoor Championship

FLUSHING, N.Y.Andre Goransson closed a strong fall half of the season with a run to the main draw singles final at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, but the California junior lost in Sunday's title match to Tulane's Dominik Koepfer.

The 22nd-ranked Goransson fell to the hard-hitting Koepfer – ranked 10th – 6-1, 7-5 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Hollviken, Sweden, native's record this season now stands at 13-2, with both losses to Koepfer.

“Andre made some adjustments late in the first set, and he played a strong second set,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Overall, Andre played well today and throughout the tournament. One of the best parts of the weekend was seeing Andre improve his problem-solving ability during his matches. He was able to work through some tough spots all week by making intelligent choices. I'm proud of Andre's performance this week, and winning the Sportsmanship Award is a sign that he's facing his challenges with a positive outlook.”

Goransson - who collected the tournament's Sportsmanship Award on Saturday - was just the third Bear to reach the indoor singles final.

“It was a tough one today,” Goransson said. “Dominik was just a little bit too good today. I don't think I played that bad. He was serving unbelievably well and hit some tough shots.”

The tournament was Cal's last of the fall.

Goransson's success bodes well for the rest of the season for the Bears, who open 2016 with a nonconference match at Tulsa on Jan. 15.
