BERKELEY, Calif. -- Celeste Boureille turned in a career-high two-goal performance, but it wasn't enough for No. 22 Cal to top third-ranked Stanford as the Cardinal slipped past the Golden Bears, 3-2, Thursday afternoon on Goldman Field. Cal completes the regular season with a 13-5-2 overall record and 5-4-2 Pac-12 record.
Cal ripped the game wide open early with Boureille's first goal coming less than four minutes into the game. Kory Lamet took the ball a few steps up the left side of the field before sending it to Boureille, who boosted it into the far right corner.
Stanford equalized quickly, using a header from Taylor Uhl to serve it to Alex Doll at the middle of the box, and Doll found net.
The Bears held on through the first half, keeping a 1-1 score on the board as they headed into the locker room. Stanford held a slight edge over Cal through the first 45, outshooting the Bears 6-4 with a 2-1 corner kick advantage. Both Cal goalie Emily Boyd and Stanford counterpart Jane Campbell notched two saves in the first half.
The Cardinal started overpowering the Bears in the second half, vastly minimizing Cal's chances at goal in the final 45 minutes. The Bears had just one shot in 35 minutes. Stanford, meanwhile, notched eight shots, eventually finding net at 58:51 when Lo'eau LaBonta connected with Taylor Uhl, who was waiting next to the right post to tap the ball in.
Less than two minutes later, Stanford drew a foul in the box and earned a penalty kick, which LaBonta successfully converted.
Down 3-1, Cal rallied back and created several scoring chances before finally capitalizing with Boureille's second scored of the night. Indigo Gibson kicked a ball from right field nearly 20 yards out, serving it to Boureille, who flicked it in with her head.
Unfortunately, the Bears couldn't come up with a game-tying goal and Stanford finished the second half with a 13-5 edge in shots, and a 19-9 shot advantage overall. Six of Cal's nine shots on the evening were on frame, while Stanford managed to put six shots between the posts. Boyd finished with three saves, and Campbell earned four.
Cal also honored six seniors – Taylor Comeau, Thelma Einarsdottir, Lorin Hom, Lamet, Grace Leer and Sandra Ley – for Senior Day. The group helped Cal to one of the winningest records of any senior class with a 52-22-11 record in the past four seasons.
The Golden Bears await the announcement of the 64-team NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament field, which will be revealed Monday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m. PT. First round action will take place between Nov. 14-16. HEAD COACH NEIL MCGUIRE'S TAKE
McGuire says: I thought our team responded tremendously well to playing against an outstanding opponent in Stanford. They are a fantastic team, well-coached by Coach Ratcliffe. To score the first goal was exciting. To give up one almost on the back of that was a little disappointing, but I think the players reacted well to make it 1-1 at halftime. We gave up two disappointing goals to go 3-1 down, but we responded very well. We scored a great goal to put us at 3-2 and we had opportunities to tie it up. This is a learning opportunity for us. We have the NCAA Tournament coming forward and we're excited about what lies ahead.
