BERKELEY, Calif. - Former Cal All-American swimmer Matt Biondi, who captured eight Olympic gold medals and set 12 world records during his career, will be inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame next March 4. In addition, the 19th class of inductees includes NFL Hall of Famer and former Raiders tackle and coach Art Shell, golfer Johnny Miller and basketball player Fred Scolari.

The winner of a total of 11 Olympic medals, Biondi also will be inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in this October.

Probably the greatest freestyler in American history, Biondi claimed 11 Olympic medals during the 1984, '88 and '92 Games. He continues to hold the American records in the 100-yard freestyle (41.80) and the 200 free (1:33.03), a decade after he set them.

Biondi won an Olympic bronze medal on the U.S. 400-meter free relay team while a freshman at Cal, and he came back to capture four gold medals, a silver and a bronze in Seoul in 1988. Biondi again returned to the Olympics in 1992 and won the silver medal in the 50 free and gold in the 400 free relay for the United States.
