Swimmer Natalie Coughlin wrapped up her first Olympics by claiming a silver medal as part of the United States' 4x100-meter medley relay team. With her fifth medal, Coughlin grabbed a share of the record for the most medals won by a U.S. woman in one Olympics. Alum Jake Wetzel also earned a silver medal for Canada in men's rowing, but those weren't the only Cal athletes in action on Day 8 of the 2004 Athens Games.
Women's Swimming
In the final women's swimming event of the Olympics, Coughlin helped the United States to a silver medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay (3:59.12). Australia won the event with a world record of 3:57.32.
In addition to today's silver medal, Coughlin won gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke and the 4x200-meter relay, a silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay and a bronze in the 100-meter freestyle. Other U.S. athletes who have won a record five medals in one Olympics include swimmers Shirley Babashoff (1976) and Dara Torres (2000), gymnasts Mary Lou Retton (1984) and Shannon Miller (1992) and track and field star Marion Jones (2000).

In the Men's Four Final A, alum Jake Wetzel helped Canada to a silver medal in a time of 6:07.06. Great Britain claimed the gold medal in 6:06.98.

In the Men's Pair Final A, alum Mladen Stegic (Serbia and Montenegro) placed fifth (6:39.74) with his partner Nikoka Stojic.

New Zealand fell to Argentina in the preliminaries, 98-94. Alum Sean Marks started for New Zealand but posted only six points and five rebounds in 23 minutes of action

Women's Beach Volleyball
Alum Holly McPeak and her partner Elaine Youngs defeated Czechoslovakia's Sona Novakova and Eva Celbova, 21-16, 21-16, in the Round of 16. The U.S. pair will now face Germany's Okka Rau and Stephanie Pohl in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
