Senior Duje Draganja (Croatia) joined Natalie Coughlin as Cal medallists on Day 7 of the 2004 Athens Games. Alum Joy Fawcett also took center stage in a quarterfinal soccer match. Here's a closer look at how the Golden Bears performed on Friday.
Men's Swimming
Draganja placed seventh (52.46) in the final of the 100-meter butterfly, but rebounded about 30 minutes later to claim the silver medal (21.94) in the 50-meter freestyle. He was only .01 behind the United States' Gary Hall, who also won gold in the event in Sydney along with Cal's Anthony Ervin.

Women's Soccer
Fawcett, who is competing in her third Olympics, helped the United States to a 2-1 quarterfinals victory over Japan. The three-time Cal All-American has started all four of Team USA's games on the back line. The United States went up 1-0 in the first half, and Japan tied the game early in the second half. Eleven minutes later Abby Wambach scored to put the United States up for good. The United States will face Germany on Monday in a rematch of a 2003 World Cup semifinal match.

Women's Water Polo
The United States defeated Russia, 8-4, in the preliminaries. Alums Heather Petri and Ericka Lorenz each saw significant minutes, and Lorenz tallied Team USA's seventh goal of the contest.

Softball
Despite posting only one hit, Canada defeated Italy, 1-0, in preliminary-round action. Alum Nicole DiSalvio (1998-01) didn't see any action for Italy.

Australia overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Greece, 3-2, in the preliminaries. Junior Lindsay James was 1-for-3 at the plate, scored a run and drew a walk. Cal head coach Diane Ninemire is an assistant coach for the Greek team.

Looking Ahead
Here's a sample of what's on tap for Cal athletes on Saturday, Aug. 21:
Natalie Coughlin will swim for the United States in the final of the 400-meter medley relay in search of her fifth Olympic medal. If she accomplishes the feat, she would equal the record for a U.S. woman at a single Olympics. The other athletes in that group include swimmers Shirley Babashoff (1976) and Dara Torres (2000), gymnasts Mary Lou Retton (1984) and Shannon Miller (1992) and track and field star Marion Jones (2000).
A group of Cal crew alums will be competing for medals Saturday and Sunday.
