Here's a rundown of how current Cal athletes and alums performed on Day 4 of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Women's Soccer
Alum Joy Fawcett (1986-89) played all 90 minutes on defense to help the United States to a 1-1 tie against Australia and the top spot in Group G with a 2-0-1 record. Fawcett hasn't missed a minute of action in her third Olympics. Team USA will face Japan in the quarterfinals on Friday, Aug. 20. The match kicks off at 6 p.m. local time/8 a.m. PT and will be shown live on MSNBC and Telemundo.

Men's Basketball
Alum Sean Marks (1995-98) posted 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in New Zealand's 69-62 loss to China in preliminary Group A action. In his 27 minutes as a starter, Marks was 4-of-7 from the floor, 1-of-3 from three-point range and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Men's Swimming
Senior Duje Draganja, who is competing for his native Croatia, qualified for the finals of the 100-meter freestyle. He clocked the fourth-fastest time (49.07) in the morning qualifying heats and moved on to the finals with the sixth-best time (49.14) in the evening semifinals. The final is on tap for tomorrow night.
Sophomore Rolandas Gimbutis (Lithuania) tied for the second-fastest time (48.85) in the qualifying heats, but his time of 49.75 (14th) in the semifinals ended his medal hopes.
Junior Milorad Cavic (Serbia and Montenegro) posted the 19th-fastest time in the qualifying heats (49.74), narrowly missing the 49.72 cutoff time to be among the top 16 to earn semifinals spots.

In the 200-meter breaststroke, alum Ratapong Sirisanont (Thailand) failed to advance out of the qualifying heats (2:15.39, 19th). Junior Miguel Molina (Philippines) placed 38th (2:19.19)

Softball
Italy lost to Australia, 7-0. Alum Nicole DiSalvio (1998-01) pitched 3 1/3 innings for Italy, allowing five hits and four runs.

Greece fell to Chinese Taipei, 2-0, despite holding a five to three hit advantage. Junior Lindsay James started in left field for Greece and went 1-for-3 at the plate. Cal head coach Diane Ninemire is an assistant coach for the Greek team.

Looking Ahead
Here's a sample of what's ahead for Cal athletes on Wednesday, Aug. 18:
Natalie Coughlin begins her quest for a second individual gold medal (other in the 100 back). She is entered in the 100-meter freestyle. Heats are in the morning, and the semifinals are slated for the evening. Cal head coach Teri McKeever is an assistant coach for the United States.
Alum Gordan Kozulj (Croatia) competes in one of the heats of the 200-meter backstroke. As a senior in 1999, Kozulj won an NCAA title in the 200m back.
Cal's Lindsay James (LF) and Diane Ninemire (assistant coach) will return to action for Greece, as the host country battles Japan.
First-time Olympians Luke Walton (Cal alum) and Artour Samsonov finished third in their heat of the men's pair last Saturday and advanced directly to Wednesday's semifinals. The duo will now race in the second of two semis against crews from Germany, South Africa, Canada, Slovenia, and Serbia and Montenegro. The top three finishers in each semifinal will advance to Saturday's final.
Alum Kristin Heaston (United States) begins pursuit of a shot put medal. Qualifying is in the morning, while the final is in the early evening. Heaston earned her ticket to Athens by finishing second in the women's shot put at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a throw of 59-04.75 (18.10m)
The United States' women's water polo team, featuring Cal alums Ericka Lorenz and Heather Petri, returns to action against Canada.
