Cal Athletes Fare Well at Goodwill Games

July 24, 1998

With a number of former student-athletes competing at the Goodwill Games, the Golden Bears are well represented in the international competition being contested through early August in New York.

The highest finish by a former Cal athlete so far has been by Chris Huffins, who took second in the decathlon with a score of 8,576 points, less than 200 points behind winner Dan OBriens 8,755 total.

Also in track & field, Travis Nutter placed seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 220 feet, five inches. The throw was just short of his career best of 225-6, which he set at the Pac-10 championships this past May.

In gymnastics, Trent Wells, a member of Cals 1997 NCAA champion team and a current assistant coach for the Bears, captured fourth place in the parallel bars with a score of 9.600. Wells was the top American in the event.

The Bears had two players on the U.S. water polo team that finished fourth in the competition. Brent Albright, who last played for Cal in 1997, scored three goals, including two in a 7-4 victory over Italy. Chris Oeding, the 1992 college player of the year, had a pair of goals for the United States.

Three other former Cal athletes will be competing this weekend, including the highly rated beach volleyball tandem of Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak. In addition, Joy (Biefeld) Fawcett is a member of the U.S. womens soccer team.
