The University of California Track and Field Camps are designed to develop each athlete's potential to its fullest, whether the participant is a beginner or future Olympian. We offer two great camps to meet the needs of different ages and levels of participants. Take advantage of this opportunity to receive instruction from our outstanding coaching staff and learn new, or improve upon, your skills and techniques to enhance your overall performance.

COACHING STAFF

Camp staff includes college coaches, current and former Cal players, All-Americans, professional players, and top coaches from around the region. Coaches are selected for their ability to train, motivate, and relate to players.

Chris Huffins, Director of Cal Track & Field and Cross Country Programs

    • Nationally recognized as a successful world-class athlete and college coach
    • Coached 12 athletes to NCAA Championships (most in Cal history) and 20 Pac-10 All-Academic team members during first season as head coach
    • Member of the US Olympic Team, 1996 and 2000
    • Bronze Medal winner, 2000 Olympic Games
    • Ranked among the world's Top 10 decathletes for seven consecutive years

Bryan Fetzer, Camp Director and Cal Assistant Coach for Women's Hurdles/Sprints - California Track & Field

    • First year as Cal assistant coach for women's hurdles and sprints • Certified Level II jumps coach
    • Has coached 72 All-Americans and 12 national champions
    • Former coach at Ball State and Gardner-Webb University

Phil McMullen, Assistant Coach for Multi's and Pole Vault - California Track & Field

    • First year as assistant coach at Cal
    • World-ranked decathlete
    • Directs pole vault, and assists with multi events

Cal coaches are assisted by other experienced track and field coaches and athletes.

What to bring to camp:

    - Running flats/shoes
    - Spikes
    - Soccer cleats (grass)
    - Sweats
    - T-shirts
    - Shorts
    - Hat
    - Necessary equipment for events - optional (e.g. vaulting poles, discus, shot put, etc.)
    - Poles for pole vault will be available for use at camp
    - Sunscreen

Additional Equipment
One free camp T-shirt and water bottle will be distributed to each camp participant.

Resident Camps
Camp participants will stay in the Unit 1 Resident Complex dormitory, located on the UC Berkeley campus. All linens including towels, sheets, and pillows are provided. Some nights get cold, and participants are encouraged to bring long pants, a jacket and an extra blanket. Phone card suggested if calls home are long distance. Dorms will have adult supervision, and boys and girls will be placed on separate floors. Resident Campers will take meals in the on-campus dining commons, and will receive dinner on Sunday through breakfast on Thursday. Commuting camp participants are responsible for bringing their own lunch, or may also purchase lunch on a daily basis at the on-campus dining commons or nearby eateries.

The airport closest to the Berkeley campus is Oakland International Airport. There are several shuttle services for transportation to and from the airport (e.g. M&M Shuttle 1-800-286-0303).

Facilities
Camps will be held on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium, located on the southwest corner of the UC Berkeley campus (corner of Bancroft Way and Fulton Street). Camp participants will train on the same track and field facilities that are used by Cal for intercollegiate competition.

This is a specialty camp for decathletes and heptathletes. The Golden Bears have produced athletes that have spent 19 different years ranked in the World's Top 10, including athletes in nine Olympic Games in the multi's.

Open to athletes from all sports who want to improve their speed and power. Camp includes dynamic warm-ups, acceleration patterns, over-speed training, plyometrics, basic lifting, and proper running mechanics.

Discounts for UC Affiliates Discontinued
Unfortunately, discounts for UC Berkeley affiliates will no longer be offered, due to increased operational costs and athletic field maintenance.

Confirmation of Enrollment
Upon acceptance into camp, participants will be sent a confirmation letter with a list of recommended items to bring and directions to camp. Online enrollments receive confirmation via email.

Refunds Policy
Written request for a transfer or cancellation must be received in the Ticket Office no less than 30 days prior to the first day of camp to qualify for a refund or transfer. Request for transfers or cancellations received prior to 30 days before the first day of camp are assessed a fee of $50 per person per camp. No refunds or transfers are issued for requests received later than 30 days before the start of camp. Camps are not prorated and participant substitutions are not allowed. No refunds are given to campers dismissed from camp for inappropriate behavior.

NCAA Restriction
Due to NCAA restrictions, institutional staff members or representatives of its athletics interests shall not employ or give free or reduced admission privileges to a high school, preparatory school, or two-year college athletics award winner.

Nondiscrimination Statement
In accordance with applicable Federal laws and University policy, the University of California does not discriminate in any of its policies, procedures, or practices on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age or handicap.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Check In: Please see Camp Details above for Check-In location. On the first day of camp, please allow at least 15 minutes extra for the check-in process. It is not necessary for parents to accompany campers to the camp area after check- in.

Pick Up: Campers need to be picked up within 15 minutes of their Camp end time. After that time, Camp Staff will no longer be available to supervise campers.

Leaving Camp Early: An authorized early release permission note must be sent if camper will be leaving camp early. The note needs to include:

    - Camper's name
    - Time and date the camper needs to leave
    - Permission for the camper to leave early by himself, if applicable
    - Signature of Parent /Legal guardian.

What to bring: Please see the Camp Details above for food, clothing and equipment needs specific to the camp. When choosing foods for lunches and snacks, please DO NOT pack perishable items, there is NO refrigeration available for food storage. In addition, we recommend that all campers bring a Water Bottle, Sunscreen and Lip Balm. And, remember to label ALL items brought to camp. Lost and Found items are donated to a local charity one week after the camp session ends.

Parking: Parking may be difficult at Camp sites, please be patient. Allow sufficient time to drop-off or pick-up your camper. Your cooperation will help maintain a clear flow of traffic during these busy times. University Parking is strictly controlled and tickets are issued quickly. Rain: Camp is usually at the assigned location even in rain. However, in the case of heavy rain, the Camp may be moved to an alternate site. Campers should always check-in at the scheduled location. If a Camp location is changed, you will be directed to the new location. Also in the case of rain, campers should bring shoes with non-marking soles for indoor use.

Medical Information/Illness: In the event that your camper becomes ill or an emergency arises, the camp staff will make every effort to contact you or your listed emergency contact. If deemed necessary by the camp staff, the camper may be transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Medications/Inhalers: A Medication Form completed by the camper's Parent/Guardian must accompany all medication to be taken by a camper. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter medications. All medications must be in current prescription bottles or original containers. Inhalers may be kept with the camper, but still require Medication Form.

A copy of the Medication Form can be downloaded from the Cal Athletic Camps website.

Communicable Diseases & Lice Policy: Notification will be given regarding any communicable diseases affecting campers. If your child contracts a communicable disease, please notify the camp staff immediately. Campers will NOT be permitted at camp if they have any signs of head lice.

Family Emergency Contact Information: If you need to contact your child at camp, please use the Emergency Contact number included in the Camp Details below. Or, you can call (510) 643-3277 and a message will be delivered.

Emergencies, Natural Disasters & Evacuation Plans: Should an emergency or natural disaster occur at or near camp, camp staff will follow standard emergency procedures to ensure the physical and emotional safety of your child. Discuss with your child what would happen if a natural disaster occurred during camp. Please, make sure that your camper has any necessary emergency phone numbers in their backpack and provide the camp emergency information to anyone who may need it.

We highly recommend that parents develop a Family Emergency Plan. The American Red Cross website provides information on developing a Family Emergency Plan.

Camp Rules: Below is a list of general camp rules. Please make sure your child is familiar with them:

    1. Respect other participants, instructors, facilities, and equipment.
    2. Always listen to staff/instructor. Show consideration when teacher and others are speaking.
    3. Teasing and put-downs are not tolerated at camp.
    4. Use appropriate language - No cursing.
    5. Stay with your group.
    6. Keep the Camp area clean, throw your trash away and if you see trash, pick it up.
    7. No game boys or CD players.
    8. Cell phone use is only allowed after camp hours.
    9. No weapons allowed.
    10. No pets may be brought to camp or to camp check-in and checkout.
    11. No drugs, tobacco, or alcohol permitted at any time.
    12. Never leave assigned activity areas without permission of staff.

For camps using the pools:

    1. Campers are only allowed in the water with the permission of the coaching staff.
    2. NO ONE is allowed in the water unless coaching staff is on deck.

Any other rules specific to a Camp will be discussed at Camp.

Behavior Guidelines and Consequences: In order to provide a pleasant environment and to ensure the safety of our campers and staff, disruptive, destructive and/or dangerous behavior by campers is NOT ALLOWED. Such behavior will result in the camper being removed from the current program. If the behavior continues, the camper will dismissed from the camp. When a participant is dismissed from camp for unacceptable behavior there will be NO REFUND.

Any of the following will result in IMMEDIATE dismissal from camp:

    * Endangering the health or safety of others
    * Possession of firearms, weapons, explosives, etc.
    * Possession or use of illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes
    * Damage or destruction of property
    * Theft
    * Fighting
    * Pulling of fire alarms
    * Leaving camp area without permission

Damage or Loss of Property: Camper's parent/legal guardian will be financially responsible for any and all damages caused by camper. Parent/Legal guardian will be billed for any damage to campus facilities or equipment.
