2008 CAL SWIMMING CAMPS FOR BOYS & GIRLS



Join our experienced and knowledgeable coaching staff at the exciting Cal Swimming Camp. We offer camps that meet the needs of different ages and abilities.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our camps this summer!

Featuring 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Natalie Coughlin!


Camp is held at Spieker Aquatics Complex, home to Golden Bear Swimming.

CAL SWIMMING CAMP
Week I: July 10-14,Thursday-Monday
Week II: July 17-21, Thursday-Monday
AGE: 9-17 years old
PRICE: Overnight Camp $775 Day Camp $695

Our camps are designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced swimmers who are interested in improving their skills. Enrollment will be limited to ensure that individuals will receive special attention and maximize their participation.

Both Overnight and Day Campers will receive all meals from first day's dinner through last day's lunch.

Both summer camp sessions are open to Girls & Boys ages 9-17, and offer an Overnight and a Day Camp option.

Day Campers may be dropped-off and picked-up at Spieker Aquatics Complex. A campus parking permit is required for all on campus lots, so please limit your access to picking up and dropping off. If parents/guardians should decide to stay and watch camps in session, please utilize street (or metered) parking located near the facility.

Overnight Campers will stay in the Unit 1 Resident Complex (dormitory). "Unit 1" is about three blocks from Spieker Aquatics Complex. There will be separate floors in Unit 1 for male and female residents. Dorms will have 24-hour adult supervision. Unit 1 is located at 2650 Durant Ave., Berkeley, CA 94720.

The airport closest to the Berkeley campus is Oakland International Airport. There are several shuttle services for transportation to and from the airport (e.g. M&M Shuttle 1-800-286-0303 or Bay Porter Express www.bayporter.com). BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) also runs from Oakland International Airport directly to the Downtown Berkeley BART Station on Shattuck Avenue, which is located just one block from the UC Berkeley campus.

Camp staff includes Cal Women's and Men's Swimming coaches, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time NCAA Swimmer of the Year, Natalie Coughlin, and other former Cal swimmers, All-Americans, and top coaches from around the region.

Kristen Lewis-Cannane, 3rd Year Assistant Coach, California Women's Swimming
Lewis-Cunnane, who graduated from Campolindo High School in nearby Moraga, Calif., was a UCLA Bruin letter winner from 2000-04 and was an All-American from 2002-04. A team captain as a senior, Lewis ranked third-fastest in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.77) and fifth-fastest in the 100-yard butterfly (53.41) in UCLA's all-time top eight lists entering the 2006-07 season.

During her career at UCLA, she served on the team mentor council and was named Most Improved Bruin for three of her four years. She also received the Bruin Braun award for her strength and passion in the weight room.

Lewis-Cunnane ended her swimming career at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Long Beach, Calif., where she was a semifinalist in the 100and 200-meter butterflies.

David Durden, 1st Year Head Coach, California Men's Swimming
Spent five seasons at Auburn, including 2005 when he was the assistant head men's coach for the 2005 NCAA champion Tigers. Prior to being the No. 1 assistant and chief recruiting coordinator for the powerhouse Auburn men's team, he was an assistant coach for both the Tigers' men's and women's swim programs. During his tenure, the Tiger men's and women's teams won a total of six NCAA team championships - the men winning in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and the women winning in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The Auburn women finished second at the national meet in 2005.

Durden also served as the head coach for the Panama team at the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2003 Pan American Games.

In 2007, Durden helped the Maryland women to a sixth-place finish, and the men to an eighth-place finish, at the Atlantic Coast Conference meet. During 2005-06, the Maryland women's team took fifth at the ACC championships, and senior Sasha Malanina was an ACC champion in the 400 individual medley.

Durden is a NCAA Division I Certified Coach, a member of U.S. Swimming and a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association. For the past five years, he has been involved with the swim camps at Auburn, serving as the camp director in 2004 and 2005.

Before coaching at Auburn, Durden served as an assistant for the highly regarded Irvine Novaquatics under Dr. Dave Salo, where he assisted in general coaching with the Olympic Trials Group and helped place four swimmers on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team.

Natalie Coughlin, All-American, California Women's Swimming

  • 2004 USA Olympian and Winner of five Olympic medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze)
  • Considered among the finest student-athletes in the history of the University of California
  • Three-time NCAA Swimmer of the Year, 2001-2003
  • Three-time Pac-10 Conference Swimmer of the Year, 2001-2004
  • Became the NCAA's first three-time titlist in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 and 200-yard backstrokes, and holds the American and NCAA records in each of those events
  • Won the Honda Award in 2001 & 2002
  • Two-time finalist for the AAU James E. Sullivan Award for the nation's best amateur athlete
