Since the Bear Backers were established in the early 1970's, loyal Cal supporters have been contributing to the lives of Golden Bear students athletes. Over the past 6 years the total number of Bear Backers has grown to record numbers, with nearly 8,000 donors making contributions last year. Donations to the annual fund also set a new benchmark, totaling more than 9.5 million dollars which accounted for 30%of the revenues to the department. Our commitment is to provide our coaches and student athletes with the resources necessary to compete for national championships on an annual basis.

Each new gift is vital to our continued success on the playing fields and in the classrooms. Your generosity has a direct impact on today's student athletes as well as the long term health of our entire athletics future. As the costs of education and the operations continue to escalate the need for your continued financial support is critical. Financial aid to Cal student athletes topped 8.5 million and team operations totaled more than 21 million in 2006-07. Your generosity assists in our mission of creating a model of what Division I athletics is all about.

The office of Athletic Development fosters the growth of transformational philanthropy to provide Cal student athletes with a one of a kind experience in a high performance environment. In order to accomplish this mission we:

• Engage prospective donors and facilitate giving opportunities.
• Nurture lifelong relationships with our donors through service, stewardship and communication.
• Conduct all business respectfully, collaboratively and with the highest professional ethics.
• Work together as a mutually supportive team.

Bear Backers enjoy the best seats and parking options available for both football and men's basketball contests. There are many other special opportunities afforded Bear Backers including pre game and halftime hospitalities at basketball and football games, away game travel possibilities and invitations to special events throughout the year open only to Bear Backer members.
