Women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb and junior guard Eliza Pierre addressed the media after the Golden Bears' 86-61 defeat to No. 2 Stanford tonight. Watch video of the news conference below.
While, I arrived late to Berkeley after traveling from the game in Palo Alto this afternoon, I walked into a large crowd at Haas Pavilion cheering on the Bears... 7,864 in fact.
Unfortunately, No. 2 Stanford raced out to an early lead and took a 43-24 advantage into halftime en route to an 86-61 victory. There is a reason Stanford finished the Pac-12 season a perfect 18-0 and 28-1 overall. Sophomore Gennifer Brandon led Cal (22-8, 13-5 Pac-12) with 11 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Eliza Pierre was also in double digits for the Bears with 10 points. Cal played even with Stanford on the boards and in the blocks with each squad recording 41 rebounds and 26 points in the paint. The Cardinal was led by Tony Kokenis with 23 points on the evening, followed by Nnemkadi Ogwumike with 22 points to go along with nine rebounds. Cal will be the No. 2 seed in this coming week's Pac-12 Tournament and will play Thursday at 5 p.m. at Galen Center against the winner of the first-round game between Colorado and Utah.
Cal men's basketball head coach Mike Montgomery, senior Harper Kamp and freshman David Kravish addressed the media after today's game at Stanford. Here is video of each of the postgame news conferences.
In an exciting Cal-Stanford rivalry game, Stanford came out on top, 75-70. The Bears (23-8, 13-5 Pac-12), who trailed at halftime, 39-34, opened the second half with a three-pointer from Allen Crabbe to cut the lead to two points, but the Cardinal (20-10, 10-8 Pac-12) responded with a 9-2 run to push the lead to eight points and Cal tried to chip away at the lead throughout the final frame.
The Bears used a 6-0 run with under three minutes to play to pull back within two points on a Crabbe successful free throw with 1:11 to play. That was as close as they would get, however, as Stanford was quickly fouled on each of their ensuing possessions and converted their first free throw attempt before regaining possession off a rebound on each of their second free throw attempts to stretch their lead to five points and the 75-70 victory. Crabbe led the way for the Bears with 20 points, while Harper Kamp contributed 19 points and seven rebounds in the game. Stanford capitalized on 15 California turnovers, scoring 20 points off turnovers in the contest. Chasson Randle led the Cardinal with 17 points in the game. With the loss, Cal will be the No. 2 seed in this coming week's Pac-12 Championship in Los Angeles and will play the winner of the first-round game between Stanford and Arizona State on Thursday at 6 p.m. Off to Berkeley for the women's basketball game... see you there. Go Bears!
Despite being limited by early foul trouble, Cal was able to hang within 10 points of Stanford most of the first half and closed the period on a 15-5 run to cut what was once a 15-point Cardinal advantage down to just five points, trailing 39-34 at the break here at a loud Maples Pavilion.
The Bears hope to erase the five-point deficit over the final 20 minutes today and capture a share of the Pac-12 championships Senior Jorge Gutierrez scored six points for the Bears before being forced to the bench for the final 5:26 of the half with his third foul. Fellow senior Harper Kamp leads Cal with nine points and three rebounds, while sophomore Allen Crabbe poured in seven for the Bears in the opening frame. Chasson Randle (12) and Andrew Zimmermann (10) led the way for Stanford in the first half. Remember, Stanford led at halftime in the season's first meeting inside Haas Pavilion and the game ended in a 69-59 Cal victory. It should be an exciting second half. Be sure to check back here for the second half recap and postgame comments. GO BEARS!
